First year of art.

I'll be beginning my senior year of highschool soon, and, sadly, I won't be able to fit art class in my schedule. For the first three years I've been in symphonic band instead of art, but I spend majority of my free time illustrating. Would it be difficult to begin art class during freshman year of college. Not as a major, but possibly as a minor.

Probably not, if you have a passion for it and pursue it in your spare time. Keep a portfolio of your work if needed for admission into a program

Many universities have art programs that you do not have to have a portfolio to get into them. From our experiences, where the school offered a BA in art or a minor in art, it did not require a portfolio to take the initial classes. For example, Pitt has a tremendous art program (BA) and they did not require anything in advance to get into the initial art classes. Good luck and have fun.

Although it is true that some art and design programs don’t have portfolio requirements, many of the better programs do. If you don’t have a portfoio, you are greatly limiting yourself. I would advise you doing what my daughter did, if you can afford it. Get a private tutor to help you develop your porfolio. If you don’t have the money for this, take a class or two at your local community college that offers courses in art. You can also simply draw objects from observation using a sketch pad and various mediums for drawing.

Thanks for all of the great advice! I’ll look into classes at my local cc and start on a portfolio.
