Hey guys I got into Penn state University Park today and am very happy. As of now, I will probably be accepting the offer but I want to learn a little bit about life in University Park, especially about the Residence Halls.

Could any Penn State students or alumni please give me an idea of life in these Residence Halls. I want to know about such things as the party life, quality of food, the general population, etc...

Any help will of course be appreciated. Thank you!

East- mostly freshmen, loud at times (until the "partiers" start to realize college requires study time), food is pretty good. Standard "cell like" dorms. Far away from most class areas.

Pollock- Mixed frosh/upperclassmen, food is good here. Little more relaxed and close to alot of the main class areas. Standard "cell like" dorms.

South- Larger dorms, mixed upperclassmen/frosh, honors dorms are here. Food is good with alot of choice (healthy dining hall vs ala carte one). Close to HUB and downtown.

West- Larger dorms, mostly upperclassmen except for a few SLOs. Best food on campus. Far away from some class areas.

North- Mostly SLOs, new large quad style dorms. Decent food, commons is a little small. Close to the business and College of Ag areas.

If you are dead set on an area you should fill out a housing contract asap. SLOs are a good way to meet people and tend to be in nice dorms.

I'm currently a freshman living in east. I would recommend living in east because only freshmen live in east. The dorms are a little small but theres lots of storage so its not that bad. As far as party life goes, most people dont party in their dorms, only pregame before going to frats or other places. Its easy to find parties to go to but if you're not into that, its easy to stay away from them as well. The food is pretty good as far as cafeteria food goes. West has the best food but you probably wont live there as a freshman. In east theres also a convience store, a pizza place, a burger place, and a wrap/sandwitch place. For the populations, east is the biggest and north is the smallest. East is all freshmen, north is a lot of sophomores and freshmen who are in slo's. West is mostly upperclassmen, pollock is a good mix, and south has a lot of sororities. The suites in north are definitely the best (you get your own bathroom!) but you could probably only swing living there if you're eligible for one of the slo's that are in north.

drexep: Didn't you visit campus and go on an official tour? I dont' know where you live, but that's really the thing to do, if you can. My D would not apply to a school she didn't visit first. She was also accepted to UP for September. We visited a few months ago.

Thanks for the information guys. The halls seem to all be very nice, I am especially interested in North and Pollock.

How many SLOs are there? I went on the PSU site and they only listed one (L.I.F.E., which does sound really cool).

I also have not accepted the offer of acceptance yet as I am still waiting for my other decisions, so I can't fill out any housing contracts yet. How are my chances if I were to wait until March/April?

Plainsman: While the campus is one of the most important factors to me, I am always open to my environment so I wasn't really worried enough to have to go and visit every campus. The campuses I did visit I did like but Penn State was a bit of a drive, so I passed.

Housing: Undergraduates here are the SLO list. YOur guaranteed to get in though if you put it down, they try to match you though.

You are pushing your chances waiting till March/April for getting an actual housing contract. Your preferenes will most likely be filled by then and you may even be put in supplemental housing.

with the majority of regular decision schools notifying students in late march and early april, i just HATE that crap about housing preferences being taken away because space is taken. I think its wrong that it works that way, but ooo well!!

jarad...it's worth the $300 to reserve your space NOW. You might even get the deposit back if you change your mind. You don't want to be stuck with supp housing...
