I am planning to major in Econ and minor in Math & CompSci and Chinese. How does this look for the 1st year (too easy, too hard, what you thought of the professors teaching the courses, etc). Thanks!

Also, how popular are the "Breaking the Code" and "Orwell" seminars? Is it unlikely that I will be unable to enroll in either of them?

Why are you thinking about this stuff so early on (before you get there)? We're gonna get advisors and then they'll help us pick courses Right??

intro econ and math are really easy classes, as far as they go. you dont need to worry about those. in the end, the IHUM and PWR that you get into will make or break your quarters, in my opinion.

is abramitzky (sp?) teaching econ 50 in the winter? i had him last year... he's hella good.

That seems like a good schedule. First quarter will probably be pretty easy, although I guess that depends on econ on IHUM. Since they broke up econ into two quarters it's probably easier than the one quarter version although I suppose no one really knows. Math 50 series is really easy. I won't do more than that first quarter though. Winter and spring seem good too.

you aren't going to know what quarter you have PWR until you show up, and winter is probably the hardest one to transfer into.

also, they don't always have the same intro sems every year, particularly not on the same quarters, so don't count your chickens...

but breaking the code is pretty easy to get into, because she just admits whoever wants to come and expands the class to be larger than the limit, i believe. had a friend who took the orwell class and he liked it, but i don't know how hard it was to get into.

uh, i have to disagree with marlgirl on the math 50 series being "really easy" but i guess it is compared to upper division. math 51 was the first math class that ever really got to me, and i heard some horror stories about 52.

all in all, though, i think you have a pretty good, balanced courseload. don't try to stick to this schedule, but i say you have a pretty good sense of how much to take and how to balance stuff, so stick with your intuition and CHILL OUT :-) wait at least until they release the bulletin!

Careful about overplanning ahead of time. You don't know when you will have PWR. And even though some profs are accomodating, all introsems are popular courses and you have to apply to get in. So those are also iffy. Good luck and try to relax for the last few weeks before you have to do this stuff for real.

IF YOU WANT TO CHECK WHEN YOU HAVE PWR*********

i don't know if it's up for freshman yet, but go to pwr.stanford.edu, click on "courses and registrations" toward the top, then "quarterly assignments" on the left side, then "view your assingned pwr 1 and pwr2 quarter". they are up for us b/c it's been up since frosh year. but for '10, i don't know, so check just in case.

They're out! I got Spring Spring both years. I think that's good. I didn;t want them in Fall cuz there's this FroSo course I want to take then.

Whoa, I got 2 fall PWRs...that doesn't look good...

Thanks for posting that, current_student. Helpful info.

Jimmy, I got fall for both also.

And thank you current_student.

I'm in the Spring also.

I didn't wan't to start a new thread, so can you guys take a look at my schedule too please. I'm planning to double major in philosophy and computer science. I will place out of Math 41, Math 42, Physics 42 and Physics 43 (18 units). I reckon I'm going to get the philosophy IHUM since I wrote about it in the education plans forms and have already got a philosophy advisor.

Autumn
-Phil IHUM (5 units)
-Phil 80 (5 units)
-Math 51 (5 units)

Winter
-Phil IHUM (5 units)
-Phil 102 (4 units)
-Phil 150 (4 units)
-CS 106A (3-5 units)

Spring
-Phil IHUM (5 units)
-Phil 170 (4 units)
-Engr 40 (5 units)
-Cs 106B (3-5 units)

Oh and can someone explain what it means when they ascribe to a course a range of units as opposed to a specific number?

Thanks very much

Also, can someone explain to me whether I can take a course that satisfies a requirement for both majors, like Phil 151?

thebravery,

you forgot your PWR class. when they ascribe a range of units, usually you pick and the professor gives you a certain amount of work for that number. for example, i took a class that was 1-3 units. i chose 1 unit and just had to attend. 2 units had to write a few papers and 3 had to do a research paper. it depends on the class though.

and i think that taking phil 151 with satisfy the requirement for both majors, but don't take my word for it. i'm not sure about that one. i think some info should be in the bulletin.stanford.edu

Well seeing as we'redoing this I guess I'll post my plan as well (I have credit for AP Math, Chem and Physics B) planning to study ChemE:
Fall:
-IHUM (5Units)
-Math 51 (5 units)
-Seminar (not sure which one)
-ChemE 10 (1 unit)

Winter:
-IHUM (5 units)
-Math 52 (5 units)
-Chem 33 (4 units)

Spring:
-Math 53 (5 units)
-IHUM (5 units)
-PWR
-Chem 35 (I think 4 units)

What do you guys think?

superwizard,

are you not taking chem 31X at all? fall looks fine (except i think you should take 31X) and you probably want to take one more class winter quarter. spring looks like a biatch. haha. but you'll manage.

so yeah, i only know one person who skipped 31 and went to chem 33. and winter shouldn't be your easiest quarter. most students take the most classes then. eh.

Nah no Chem 31X for me. I honestly don't know what to take in winter I would've taken Chem36 but they don't offer it in winter I'm sure I'll find something by then. Any ideas?

How about an introductory seminar, or something randomly interesting like photography or pilates or ultimate frisbee?

I was thinking about asking to move my PWR course to winter and taking Chem36 in Spring. What are the chances for switching PWR from Spring to Winter?
