I just got my packet in the mail that includes info on the first year tutorial.

i must say that i am kind of disappointed with the selection, nothing really stands out at me, so i am going to have a difficult time in choosing FIVE of them.

I think several of the more poli-sci oriented ones are facinating (I'm feeling a major in PoliSci, but I'm looking at Chinese too). Lots of religion and politics, a fair amount of history--a lot up my alley. When I first looked at the list I felt the same way, but after reading most of the descriptions I felt pretty good about some of them.

yeah some of the course titles are a little disconcerting, but if you read the descriptions then a lot of them seem a lot better, and some of them seem really cool. I had about 7 I really liked.

You may want to pick a tutorial based on the professor who teaches it. The real purpose of tutorials is to teach you how to research, write a college paper, use the library, etc. Your tutorial prof becomes your advisor. It's just a suggestion.

I narrowed down the list to the tutorials I found somewhat interesting, then referred to www.ratemyprofessors.com to get the top 5 professors out of the group. Probably the best way to go...that is, unless EVERYONE does it, then there will be no tutorial spots for anyone. Hmm...

i dont know if youre allowed to choose only four; i think they make you pick 5. i also heard that its not really first come first serve, and that the administation tries really hard to give everyone either their first or second pick. i also heard that the people who sent theirs in pretty late last year didnt get what they wanted at all, so i guess it would be better to get your choices in earlier, even though its not first come first serve

this should be the first question. i don't know what took me so long to be curious about this,
what's in the tutorial package? is it the course description i can find in pioneerweb or there're more things like books you have to read?
i'm international so regular mail takes like two or three weeks to get here. :P

the tutorial package is the same thing basically. you have to register for your tutorial classes on pioneer web anyway, and the decriptions they give for the tutorials dont have anything thats not on pioneer web. but along with the tutorial thing, they also send you some paper that we're supposed to fill out thats for our advisor that talks about what subjects we like and what classes we are interested in taking next semester (they also send a list but no real descriptions of the classes open to freshman next year) plus a form for people with disabilities.
