First Yr Studies PE

If a student is a member of a Varsity athletic team, do they still have to take the 2 semesters of PE as outlined in the FYS Program? Or is the PE requirement waived due to participation in a varsity sport?

The standards are a little different for Varsity Athletes. The PE requirement is 2 semesters in length - the entire Freshman year. Each semester is divided into 3 rotations with a different activity selected for each rotation. Within the first week of school starting, every Freshman must pass a swim test. Failure to pass means that you will be automatically enrolled in swim lessons which will then take up your first 2 PE rotations for the First Semester. If you pass the test, then you will sign-up for what activities you want to do during your rotations - golf, volleyball, handball, raquetball, fencing, ballroom dancing are a few that I remember. However, every student MUST TAKE contemporary topics - a two rotation health class. It must be taken in consecutive rotations, so for rotation 1,2 or 3,4 or 5,6.

To summarize if your son or daughter is a varisty athlete, who passes the swim test. They hopefully will be able to enroll in contemporary topics for their first 2 rotations, and that should be all the more they have deal with the PE requirement. They are not required to participate in the activities other than Contemporary topics because of the amount of time they will spend in practice.

Hope this helps. If it isn't clear, feel free to ask for more info

Thank you, nemo -- You very clearly answered our question!

what sort of proficiency does one need to pass the swimming test? like in terms of laps? a certain yardage? thanks.

I honestly forget how many lengths of the pool it was. I think it was around 4 lengths - 100 yds. I could be wrong with that number though. The P.E. teachers each watch certain lanes and observe your strokes and general swimming ability. Then at the end, when you emerge they tell you if you either passed or not, and send you down to report the result. Don't think this means you can cheat - you're either given a green or red card (I think we all know which color means what...) and you have to turn that in and the results are recorded.

Personally I didn't take the swim test...I was allowed to opt out because I was a Lifeguard and also an Instructor...and since I had to pass a more stringent swim test with that program in the past, there was no need for me to have to demonstrate it again I was told.

nemo- to be exempt from the swimming test, does one just show proof of lifeguard certification?

If they're still letting you get away with it...yes. I know most of them would recognize ARC certification. I don't know about YMCA or else NPWLTP (Ellis and Associates)...If you really don't want to do swim test, bring it up in one of the initial PE class meetings. My advice do it after class, you don't want to look like a smartass to the rest of those in the room with you.

hey I didn't get censored...I'm amazed. Normally that word seems to trigger the software.

Lol, good deal. I wouldn't mind taking a swim test, but if I can get out of it, I may as well...

swimming proficiency? by my definition, that would mean STAYING AFLOAT. i consider myself in good shape and an able athlete, but no one has ever analyzed my form.

if i fail this, i am going to be ****ed.

sounds like PE from boys boarding school in the 60's or something

If I wear goggles, would that be sketchy? I can swim yet, without goggles, Ill bump my head...

2nd thing) In high school, we had a swim test of 2 Lengths---but the thing was that we could doggy paddle our self to each side and it wasn't necessary to swim.

1.) good question...yes of course you can wear goggles. With the prevalence of contacts these days, a large number choose to...

2.) not sure what you're asking here...

my question is basically, how good of a swimmer do u have to be to pass.

OMG I dont think I could swim 4 laps non-stop freestyle. I could do breast stroak, but rather awkwardly and slow :(

If you are worried about failing, just practice a little bit whenever you go swimming this summer.

believe me, they are not looking for swim team form. There goal is to separate the non-swimmers and try to give them a chance to learn the fundamentals. Kinda make sense when you consider the Fisher Regatta and the presence of the lakes on campus.
