I'm thinking about bringing my betta fish with me next semester into my dorm room. Good or bad idea? I'll be living in a suite, so cleaning the bowl shouldn't be much of a problem. My school allows up to 10-gallon tanks, and I can't stand to be apart from the little guy.

Do you know anyone with a fish in his or her dorm room?
Is this a bad idea, or can some good come out of it?

Fish are wonderful to have! They bring a bit of cheer to a cramped up dorm room. I had one last year when I lived in the dorm…unfortunately, I left for a weekend and asked my roomie to watch him…I have NO idea what she did, but he looked like his fins and been cut off! I tried nursing him back to health for months but he eventually died. :(

I have a betta fish! He’s great, all you have to do is feed him and clean him. They’re cheap, decorative, and they can help with stress and loneliness in college.

I think it’s a great idea to bring your fish! I’ve actually never thought of that but now, I’m definitely going to get a fish for college. Thanks for the awesome idea!

Yay! I really love my fish, and I can’t keep him at home anymore; he gets lonely!! I read in another forum that “people who have betta fish are lame,” and, even tough I don’t care if I’m lame, I didn’t want to get myself into something I didn’t know I would get myself into. I hope you all enjoy your fish! I know I will!! :)

I am a grad student living on campus and I have a fish in my office.

Do think about how you are going to take care of your Betta when you are away from school for more than a weekend (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc). Can it come home with you every time or is that either impossible (flying) or super stressful for the fish (long car rides)?

I would just make sure your roommate is cool with you bringing in a fish. My roommate never asked me and, just one day out of the blue, brings in a HUGE tank with several betta fish. I cried tears of joy when he said in his thick southern accent: “I bought me sum betta fish”. It’s one of the many reasons why I absolutely despise him.

XelbMS: Unless those are female betta fish they’re going to kill each other. >_<

Another thing to consider when bringing a fish is the temperature of your room. In the srping semester my room is anywhere from 40 to 70 degrees depending on the day (I have no control of the heat). If my fish was here he’d probably die so he stays home with my mom for the spring.
