I’m going to be a freshman at Rutgers- New Brunswick next year and I have a 2 fish that I want to bring. I will be staying in dorms and they are in a 3 gallon tank that is really quiet. Would I get in trouble for keeping the fish to my dorm?
You’re not allowed to have pets unless they are for health purposes, for example my RA is allowed to bring her dog but only because she has diagnosed anxiety and depression.
Also, if you plan on keeping your fish at Rutgers, it will be a problem because winter break is a month long and most dorms are closed during this time. Who will feed your fish?
Yes, you can have a fish in your dorm. If you would like to read into the rules too much, technically you are “not allowed” to have pets, but a fish is most definitely acceptable. I was a freshman last year and lived in Mettler Hall, and I knew plenty of people in dorming that had fish, in-fact I am pretty sure they gave out fish in one of their student run events for people to keep at some point during the year.
While you are moving in however, I would refrain from broadcasting to other people as well as your RA that you are doing this. I highly doubt they will fine you for having a fish or even have a problem with it, but keeping it on the quieter end is always better because then it leaves room for question, “Well if he has a fish can I bring my turtle?” and so on. With that, most RA’s are easy going.
