Can anyone tell me what the business school is like? Is it a good program?

I'm not in the business school, but I do know that it is ranked 12th in the nation.

I just recently visited Fisher as I am transferring to OSU in the fall.

-Undergrad building is actually surprisingly nice. I was glad a/b that.
-Like the post above says, it is ranked 12th. I'm hoping that it will move up in the ranks when they are released in a few months, because I'm hoping the Fisher name becomes more recognized within the next couple years.
-Instead of majoring in an area, you specialize in it. Not really too sure what this means...

I'll try to post some more stuff as I think of it.

I'm interested to hear what others have to say.

Most of my friends have gotten into Fischer, not really sure about the requirements but its pretty close to the Honors requirements. Don't worry about the rankings, #12 is pretty darn great, and the top 10 are so close to each other that they are almost interchangable, it's a great school, theres no doubt about that.

The school named after Fisher's nephew is much better. :-)

I was going to spend some time responding to your post, rjkofnovi, until I checked your post history and saw you're just a troll.

Don't you have better things to do?

Well, I just had a tour with OSU and Fisher and it was amazing! I'm so excited to be applying in the fall and, hopefully, to attend the following year. I thought I'd post what I learned today:

Freshman hoping to be a business major are usually not entered directly into the program, but into Pre-Business Major Program. The requirements for pre-Business are a 25 ACT or 1150 SAT or be in the top 20% of your high school class. Then, in order to enter the school and the associated majors after the first quarter or so, you must have either a 3.4 GPA or completion of Math 131 or equivalent with a grade of C- or better.

The only way to enroll directly into the Fisher School of Business as a Freshman: Top 10% of high school class and 30 ACT or 1340 SAT. Basically you have to be an honor student, is what I gathered.

The basic program offers one undergraduate degree called the Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Adminstration, with specialization. The first year is spent doing required general education courses (GEC's) like math, stat, econ, and biz classes. Then, the next few years are spent in two areas: a business core (which are classes you are required to take) and a specialization area selected by the student.

Specializations are: accounting, aviation management, economics, finance, human resources, information systems, international business, marketing, operations management, real estate and urban analysis, risk management and insurance, logistics management.

There are some great (paid) internship opportunities, study abroad programs all over the world, individual time with a counselor, job fairs, a listserve that details jobs and interns available, and some nice scholarships. Oh, and there is a Scholars housing community for Business majors. It all sounded really cool.

The overall impression I got was that OSU, for its size, really cared about how the students do. If there are any questions I can answer about the mechanics of the program, please ask! I'm still really fresh on the information.

vivired75, thanks for the info; I am pre bussiness;; heh :)

gotta study...eww

This help me a lot. I been accepted pre-business to Ohio state next year and im about to finish my first year with a 3.2 average at a different college. Im looking to go into Fisher for business management. How hard is it for this major? i been accepted to other colleges and i dont want to go here and not get into the business school.

You will have to pick a specialization, like finance, accounting, marketing, economics, operations, logistics, HR, international business, etc. You then have to apply to the individual specialization within the business college (there is no general business management degree), and different specializations have different levels of selectivity. I’ve been told that acceptance to the finance and accounting majors is the most competitive, but those are also among the better choices for a business major in terms of career opportunities and starting salary.

I think you could at least get into one of the less selective specializations as a transfer student with a 3.2, but perhaps not one of the more selective ones unless you get really good grades in your first semester or two here and get your GPA to above a 3.5.

I suggest you talk to a business advisor about when to apply to a specialization, or to get advice about which one you should apply to. You can start out in one, perhaps a less selective one, and then apply for a more selective one once you get your GPA up if that is an issue.

Business management is the degree all Fisher students graduate with, but the different specializations have different levels of difficulty. I’m a senior finance major if you have any other questions about Fisher or the finance major in particular. Finance and accounting are more math-based than the other business majors, and generally considered to be more rigorous, but I don’t think even the finance curriculum is particularly difficult compared to an engineering or CS curriculum. I have more work and more difficult work than my friends majoring in something like anthropology or psychology, but I still have a lot of free time.
