giving ucsd 5 stars seems like a bad move for credibility.

I might sound like a n00b, but what makes a college a “half” LAC?

I agree kb, UIUC, UCSD, GT and Olin do seem to benefit from very high ratings.

Another intriguing thing is that if you look at the Times Higher Education Supplement’s World Rankings, UMichigan is rated in the top 20 (#19) and is placed ahead of many universities in the US that are in the US News Top 25.

^^^Michigan is indeed better than quite a few schools rated ahead of it in the so called top 25 at USNWR.

what about USC for 4 1/2?

USC does not receive a ***1/2 by Fiske. It receives an academic rating of 1/2. Emory, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt get academic ratings of and Boston College and USC get academic ratings of ***1/2.

Please keep in mind that no ranking/rating is 100% accurate. Fiske seems to slightly (by probably 1/2 a point) underrate schools like BC, Emory, Notre Dame, USC and Vanderbilt and seems to slightly (by probably 1/2 a point) overrate schools like Barnard, GT, Penn State, UCSD and UIUC.

I like their ratings! ;-)
