As of now, I love Dartmouth and am considering apply Early Decision as it sticks out to me above other schools, especially with its strength in my major, quarter system, and general student happiness. However, I don’t fit the general stereotype (obviously only take stereotypes lightly, but there is truth in them) of a Dartmouth student. For one, I don’t like sports. I heard the 3/4 of Dartmouth students are involved in athletics, which is fine by me, but will my social life suffer if I’m not? Also, I’m not the biggest fan of the outdoor sports. I love the outdoors, but outdoor sports hold little appeal to me. I’m okay with the rural setting because I feel like that could create a community, and it’s well-connected to other cities, and I’ve come to terms with the Greek Life (not my fav, but fine). I’m a pretty outgoing person in general, and I love a thriving arts scene.
3/4 involved in athletics seems pretty high. My D will be starting in the fall and does not play sports or party. When she attended Dimensions in April she found that she connected with the current students and incoming freshman. I think you would be fine- good luck in the application process!
I think there are plenty of opportunities for non-sporty, non-athletic, artsy people to thrive at Dartmouth. I think coping with the winter and the rural setting are bigger challenges for most, and that the frats might surprise you with their diversity of personalities and interests. If you love the outdoors, and can tolerate the cold, Dartmouth is a beautiful place to go to college.
