Fit Or Parsons

Hi,

I have a bfa in fashion design and want to go on business related.
A friend recommended the Pratt Design Management Program.
But I also found out about FIT’s Global Fashion Management.
I am having trouble on deciding which program is better.
I would like to see some feedbacks or rankings…and compare.
but not sure how to look for them.
Could anyone give me advices?

And that’s why Parson’s always wins the Fusion show? Oh wait… :)

“Parsons without a doubt. FIT is laughws upon by Parsons students. Interships in New York are always looking for Parsons students. FIT more prestige? Joke. Parsons is a well respected school. FIT is known because of Lauren Conrad going to the sister school in Cali. FIT is not even compareable to Parsons. That’s why Parsons is much harder to get into.”

Wow, fitzcharles, you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about, and you don’t know how to write proper English. Let me ask you something, are you a student at either of these schools? What credibility do you have? Clearly, none because you can’t even get your facts straight.

FIT IS NOT the sister school of FIDM. They are two completely separate institutions. Little known fact: Parsons is NOT harder to get into - they’re acceptance rate is now around 60% whereas FIT’s acceptance rate is around 40%- of that a small percentage is fashion majors. Plus, if you went through the dmission requirements, you would know that FIT’s are more detailed and time-consuming than Parsons’. FIT is known because of its reputation as one of the best fashion schools in the US and its notable alumni. Seriously-- go google it.

Haha, that fitzcharles guy. I wish FIT was easier to get into in comparison to Parsons. I have had several friends who were rejected by FIT and went to Parsons because of it. I’m not saying Parsons is not credible, because in all reality, Parsons V FIT… it is simply subjective, it is your opinion. But in my humble opinion, I would rather go to FIT because of its high placement in internships, structure of coursework, and environment.

Uh…Can we just agree that they are both good schools? They both have their plus and minuses…

There’s so many jobs in that field. There’s a book titled “Career Opportunites in the Fashion Industry” check it out I applied for the same major, now I’m waiting to see if I got in. Good Luck

Hi,
I have applied to Parsons and FIT for fall 2011. Im very anxious to know the admission decision. Do u guys know how long it usually takes?? I submitted my application well past the deadline, you think thats why I havent heard from them yet?? help!
thanks in advance :D

what is an undergraduate degree?

deadline for application at Parsons is 10.01.2011! Good luck ppl

Hi! I’m currently a freshman in high school (grad of 2015), but I’m positive I want to go into fashion designing in a NY college/university. Parsons and FIT both caught my eye, but apparently a lot of sites are saying that Parsons is ranked number 2 world-wide (number 1 in the US), and FIT falls only around number 5 or 6. Parsons is apparently more selective about its students now compared to FIT. I’ve had my eye on FIT for longer, though. I think I might apply to both schools in the future, but I was wondering which school would be a better choice for me? Oh, and I live in Canada, so I’d have to pay extra to attend those schools, I think.

FIT was my choice :)

Hello!

ADVICE MUCH NEEDED…

About a year ago, I graduated with my B.S. in Communications and minor in Fashion Design.

Ultimately, I would love to become a designer! But I believe I need to improve my sewing and pattern making skills. I was looking into a certificate program at F.I.T and Parsons. But unsure of which one I could benefit most from.

F.I.T doesn’t have a Fashion Design certificate program, however I was looking into their Patternmaking Certificate program and maybe take some sewing classes there on the side OR Parsons Fashion Design Certificate program.

Parsons might seem like the obvious school to go with because they have exactly what I’m looking for BUT the cost per class is twice as much as FIT.

Advice will be appreciated! Thanks :)

I’ve noticed that Parsons seems, to me at least, more about conceptualizing whereas FIT seems more focused on directly applicable skills to get a job. So if you are more interested in working on your designs go with Parsons or if you want to work on actual garment creation then I think FIT will be better. I also recommend you compare the course descriptions and contact admissions or even a professor for more detailed information. An added bonus is that they may remember you when it comes time for admission.

As someone who went to both schools (I attended FIT for Illustration and Computer Animation/Interactive Media and Parsons for Design and Technology) I can attest that what thecbray says is true. Parsons tends to be much more conceptual with their curriculum. The mindset behind this is that your portfolio will always be advanced and ahead of the market. The reality, however, is that it’s two folds and might not work in your favor if you’re trying to apply for a job with that kind of portfolio. Employers want to be sure that you understand the capabilities of the mediums you are working with. With that said, I’ve noticed that Parsons kids tend to be really good at thinking about the “big idea”, and explaining themselves and their work, whereas FIT people have a really good command of their technical skills but the school doesn’t encourage in class discussion or participation. FIT is definitely the more commercial school out of the two, so if that’s what you’re into, I would say FIT or SVA would be good. But I think that Parsons models itself after NYU a little bit more.

I’m researching Advertising Design/Communication Design, does anyone have any thoughts to share?

(Living in NYC and love the low tuition at FIT)

THE COMMUNICATION DESIGN DEPARTMENT AND PROGRAM AT FIT IS PHENOMENAL… YOU EARN AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN TWO YEARS, THEN A BACHELOR’S IN TWO MORE YEARS (2+2 PROGRAM) BUT YOU CAN TAKE COMMUNICATION DESIGN TO LOTS OF OTHER FIELDS FOR THE BACHELORS WITHIN FIT’S ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL… FABULOUS PROGRAMS… FOR NYC AND THE EDUCATION YOU RECEIVE, REALLY A TRUE BARGAIN AND A BLESSING IN DISGUISE… I LOVE MY SCHOOL…
