newbie to this thread waving - hope there’s room for one more?
My background, I had a running “hobby” for about 10+ years, that I officially ended in 2017 after on-gain/off-again foot/ankle/knee/back troubles. Since then, I’ve mostly just been a walker. I try to get 3-4 miles in per day, several times per week.
About a year ago, on a whim, I took a Strong30 class at work and soon got hooked on that, doing it three times a week until the world stopped in March. The instructor has started the class up again on zoom, and I tried it a few times, but it just wasn’t the same for me. I’m not sure if I’ll feel comfortable going back to in-person class if it starts up again. It is held in a good-sized gymnasium so there’s room to spread out, but…I’m just not sure.
So, in June, desperate to find my next thing, I signed up for tennis lessons with a friend. I love it! I take a weekly lesson and then play/practice with my friend two additional mornings per week, and my H sometimes comes out with me on the weekend. I guess it is really just using different muscles than I had become accustomed to, as I’ve noticed a huge difference in my body and how my clothes fit.
Anyway, overall, my goal is simply to do something every day, be it a walk, bike ride, tennis.
My gym has been moving some of their equipment (squat racks, bench presses, deadlift platforms, rowers, air bikes, etc.) outside each day. Members are allowed inside, but only one at a time and typically we have to rotate. We all wear masks, except when you’re in the middle of a lift or in my case a HIIT.
Hi @DeeCee36 You sound a lot like me but I’m not playing tennis! Got in an hour plus walk with some jogs this morning. Weather wasn’t too terrible but we might get some of the storm effects from the coast. Felt good to be outside and have the time to myself. I was using a gym at my work and it is not back open yet. Will your Planet Fitness survive @ClassicMom98 ? Aren’t they in bankruptcy?
It’s interesting that you mentioned tennis. I played it a little bit as a kid, and as I’ve run the past few years it seemed the tennis courts at the park were almost always empty. I had nobody to play with but thought how nice it would be to have available courts. Then last week I noticed a time when BOTH courts were in use, unusual. Maybe a lot of people are getting “cabin fever”.
STRONG Nation™ combines body weight, muscle conditioning, cardio and plyometric training moves synced to original music that has been specifically designed to match every single move. Every squat, every lunge, every burpee is driven by the music, helping you make it to that last rep, and maybe even five more.
And yes, the cute tennis clothes are a bonus. Nothing like a new fitness hobby to justify dropping $$ at Lululemon
@colorado_mom I think tennis is enjoying a resurgence as it’s a good, socially-distanced way to play with friends. I know my D24’s school had a record 35 girls go out for the team this fall (they usually have about 20 and between varsity, jv and practice team don’t have to cut anyone, not so this year).
I have a squat stand & weight set-up in my basement. Not a gym member.
I have re-joined our hiking club recently. Although it is outside, no one is distancing and no one is wearing a mask – and we are walking shoulder to shoulder and/or single file for hours on end. Last Sunday was 40 ppl in the group – a lot of retirees.
I think it can be confusing trying to assess one’s risk of contracting COVID. In my small world of mostly restaurant workers, there was a bad outbreak in the BOH in April where my husband works – yet almost no one in the FOH got it. And where I work, most of the BOH cooks work 2 jobs, don’t wear masks, and not a single known case in the store I work at, nor at the sister location. Defies logic.
My brother, 68 and a lung transplant recipient, will only wear a mask when required by a business. He does not wear one when we go to the shooting range. He works out regularly at PF (mask required) on the treadmill or bike. Travels up to MN regularly to see his GF. Not infected. Go figure.
When I hike with my husband, we wear masks any time near other hikers. It just seems the right thing to do. In Rocky Mountain National Park, I’d say the majority of people do the same… but if not, I just try to keep as far spaced from them as I can. If we were hiking with friends, probably we’d keep the masks on. We are planning a picnic there with another couple tomorrow (a first during covid), but we likely sit at different tables or use our folding chairs to ensure spacing.
@HighTide2020 Are you thinking of 24 hour fitness? I had not heard of Planet Fitness being in bankruptcy. The number of people in my gym at 5-6am is roughly the same number as pre-pandemic. I can’t say how crowded it is at other times. However, in my area most people are carrying on like usual. Indoor dining parking lots appear to be packed. Our meals tax collected a higher amount the first two months of this fiscal year than last.
No one ever said. We must be in a parallel universe or something.
I didn’t want to jinx it, but CA posts their Covid stats every Tuesday and my County has been on watchlist for what seems like forever. And I knew we already had two weeks in a row of stats below the standard (good news). Well, my County has now had 3 weeks in a row of good numbers and we’re back inside the gym today.
I found my usual spot near the large roll up door and did my workout, which consisted of power cleans and muscle ups for strength and skill work. And then the HIIT was a 2-part combo. Power cleans and dips and then push press and toes to bar. 14:38.
I even warmed up running on the treadmill, which hasn’t been used in months.
It’s another beautiful day here today - plan to make the most of the opportunity to enjoy it with some light fitness activities.
Quick 30 minutes of “tennis-lite” (no scoring, really just focusing on trying keep a good rally going) with my H first thing this morning.
I’ll take my dogs on a 3 mile walk at lunch time (definitely not a power walk between all of the stopping and sniffing).
Knocking off work a bit early today and will bike down to the beach (just 2 miles each way) to enjoy the afternoon there. Depending on the water temp, I may try to do a bit of swimming (likely my last time in the ocean this season).
Will take an evening walk with my bestie - we usually try for 2-3 miles at a pretty good clip.
@DeeCee36 - are you in the D.C area? I am in Northern VA and it is beautiful fall weather here.
Ran 5 miles this morning. I am loving the cool mornings though I wish the sun still came up earlier (can’t have it all…). My pace has picked up a bit, I think because I have been running a lot this year. The weather helps, too.
