We’ve got your back! Try and enjoy the day and share some details afterwards!
Good luck! I hope all goes well and you don’t hurt yourself.
Report back and let us know how it goes.
What a great idea. Please share some of your adventures with us. Sorry about the injury.
You are an inspiration. I can’t wait to hear how it goes.
Good luck sushiritto! That’s exciting!
ClassicMom98- love this idea!!
Good luck @sushiritto !
@ClassicMom98 I also love the “50 Weeks to 50”. I did something similar when my youngest left for college. Wrote up a list of places to go/things to try, etc. May not prevent getting older but definitely prevents “thinking older”.
I’ve been keeping up with my walking and biking. I did 18 miles on the bike today, and just 4.2 walking yesterday. Tomorrow we head to Vermont for a 6 day bike trip. It actually starts Sunday, but all the hotels require 2 night minimums, and it starts early Sunday, so we are going tomorrow. It looks like it may rain the first 3 days, which will NOT be fun, but we are happy to be going. Actually, we did a similar ride in 2019, and the day it rained ALL DAY may be one of the most memorable. You work with whatever weather you get…
I’ve kept up one-on-one personal training, three times a week, since the beginning of June. Since I started losing weight, a year ago, I’m down about 33 pounds. 24 to go. Best of all, I’m gaining muscle and losing fat. My trainer is the same age as my middle kid, but he’s really good. He pushes me.
We’re hiking on the Appalachian Trial tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to it. My trainer gave me strict instructions to rest on Sunday.
Good luck with today’s weigh-in! You got this!
@MaineLonghorn that’s great progress! Enjoy your hike.
Well, we set our individual rack heights (how high or low you take the bar from the rack), checked all my clothes (undies, socks, shirt, shoes, etc.) and equipment (belt only for me, but most people also wear knee sleeves, wrist wraps, etc.) and then I weighed in with underwear only. Surprise, NOT, I made my weight class. (I’m about as consistent as they come).
The person who pushed me into this competition is shooting for a National record for the 90 kg (198 lb) class and he’s been dieting and cutting weight for a couple months now. In the past few days, he’s cut water (“water cut”) and bought a day passes to 24 Hour to spend a lot of time in the sauna. He made his weight 90 kg weight class by 0.3 kgs. So he weighed 197.7 lbs at weigh in, NAKED! (in a room with an official).
I call it “cheating,” but it’s legal. They should weigh us right before or after the lifts. Because tomorrow he’ll probably be back up to 215 lbs.
I was told and read that my opening weights should be weights that “you can wake up at 2 AM and lift easy.”
I’m taking the day off today, but yesterday I did a 20-min HIIT consisting of box step-ups with a dumbbell, jump rope, kettlebell swings and push-ups. I’ve reduced intensity and length of workouts this week for the meet tomorrow. I can’t wait to go back to my normal programming.
Main things for me tomorrow is to be patient and listen to the judges commands and hit squat depth (below parallel).
Cheering squad ready for tomorrow from afar! Yes, listen and also try and enjoy the experience!
Wha time is the competition so we can send good vibes?
The lifting begins around 9 AM. Competitors have to be there earlier for a session on the rules. There are 5 flights or lifting groups. I’m in the C or middle flight.
I’m a lightweight compared to the others, so I’ll be in the early part of the group, for each lift. Then they don’t have to unload a bunch of weight for me, if I had to go after a “big boy” or “big girl.”
I think I’ll be squatting around 10:30-ish. I have to figure out whether I’ll go conservative or “go big” with my other two lifts for each movement.
I worry about my deadlift. That’s the one where I can get into trouble.
Waiting for an update …
Big day for @sushiritto !
Well, I definitely didn’t win Best Lifter, that’s for sure.
Riddle me this. How does one finish both in first and last place? Out of 65 competitors, I was the only one, in their 50’s, competing in ALL THREE lifts. Male or female. That was very surprising. So, I got first place. I beat no one in my age class and the 20 and 30 somethings blew right by me with heavier weight.
Good news and not so good news. The not so good news first. I left a lot of weight “on the table.” All my final attempts were just a little too easy for me. The good news is that I beat all my lifting projections with new PR’s on bench press and deadlift and I tied my squat PR. But I certainly could have lifted more weight on all three lifts. Doh!
8:30 AM to 5:30 PM! Everyone looked spent. My body feels great, even with all the warmup sessions for each lift. But my brain is fried. That’s a VERY long day of standing around, people kibbitzing, in a hot gym (all doors were open, air sucking fans on and I kept leaving the gym to go outside and also get some lunch) wearing a mask, but for my lifts.
So, as people began to leave, I hopped on the treadmill in the back for a “quick” 5K and some zen quiet time. Of course, my gym buddies thought I was freekin’ nuts.
Considering the health benefits of strength training, I’m more than just a little surprised that there weren’t any other male or female competitive lifters over 50 in the area.
So good to hear your report! Focus on that first !!!
And of COURSE you jumped on a treadmill afterwards - I suspect you could beat some additional groups on a treadmill challenge!
Thanks for sharing - would you do another?
You’ll know better for next time.
Sounds like a success!
Congrats! Thanks for taking us along on your adventure.
