That’s exciting! I hope you get to do something fun too when in NYC.
A few years ago we were in NYC in afternoon/evening after marathon. It was fun to see all the runners around town with plastic capes, I assume given out at end of race. It was cold in November.
Super fun, FallGirl! Congrats! Watching the NYC marathon was exciting. People say it’s the best (most fun/motivating) in the world. I bet the half is awesome also!
Yesterday morning we did the really cool 4.5 mile walk at our resort. Most of it is path along the river, there are 2 steep climbs (down to river and then back up). We then played 18 holes of golf.
We finished vacation with another 18 holes. Temperatures were only in the upper 30s with nasty winds. Had it not been our last day, we might have bailed.
Glad you got to golf again. As a coworker used to say, “a bad day of vacation always beats a good day at work”
I ran again today, temp in high 40s. I like this weather for running, but since I run a lake trail with most of it out in the open it does take some planning to get the clothing/layers right. Wind and sun/clouds at the time are big factors.
Good news here. I ran 6 days this week and didn’t feel the need to have an XT “day off.” M-F I go roughly 6 miles followed by 20 min of bike/stairmonster. Saturday 8 miles. Today was 5 min faster than last week. Very little walking now and I allow myself to creep down to 8:30 pace here and there. Still not enough to make me tired, hence the 20 min stints where I try to get my HR up. But I’m pleased with the progress. Sundays are now completely off as the gym doesn’t open until 7. At least I have more energy to get all of the house work done in one day.
Everyone doing OK so far? I always do my thing, but as far as eating, if it slides here and there, no biggie. That’s what holidays are for. Jan 1 I hit the reset button. We went to a steakhouse last night out of town. It’s pretty famous around here, but we had never been. I took off work early so it would be less crowded (esp. on a Tuesday). We had cheese fries as an appetizer. Then older S ate a big salad, bread, a 12 oz. steak, and mac & cheese. Then, as soon as we got home, he had a piece of pie, a cupcake, and a bag of cookies. I swear that kid is a human garbage disposal. Oh to be young and male!
Just when you think you’ve seen everything at the gym - or I probably have seen it before, just not in awhile. But a guy kept taking breaks to go outside and smoke. I guess working out is better than not, but if you can’t make 10 min while working out, you might have a bigger problem.
@ClassicMom98 that is pretty interesting about that guy.
I have started to to train for my upcoming half (3/20), ran 5 miles today. I enjoy cold weather running if no ice/snow or bitter wind.
Christmas is very toned down here this year so food should not be an issue. I made sugar cookie cutouts but most of them went to the running group brunch so just had a few. H is determined to bake (?) some other types of cookies but not anything I like so no temptation there…
The gym where I go has a person who, as he began his fitness journey, kept stepping out of the gym for a smoke. Over the years, I can’t say that I’ve ever seen that before either. He doesn’t come to the gym that much, but when he does, he does appear to be able to control himself nowadays.
I have no problem avoiding treats. I’ve reached the “my body is a temple” stage of my life.
I’m still feeling the effects today of a programmed half “Murph” with weight vest, except I subbed in two 1,000m rows instead of two 800m runs. The one treadmill the gym does have has been on the “fritz.”
I don’t know if it’s just colder this winter or my body temperature is dropping as I get older, but those compression leggings sure are coming in handy this winter. And all my gym buddies, both male and female, seem to be having a lot of good gym conversations around my wearing them on the days that I wear them.
I’ve been getting out to run once or twice a week. Yesterday was windy, but at 60 degrees couldn’t resist. Also try to do frequent video exercise (arms, leg stretches).
It is fun talking about running with my 94 year old Dad who lives in NY (and has walked a lot in later years, after many years prior of skiing, Adaptive ski instruction, tennis, and windsurfing). He was so impressed yesterday that I ran 4.5 miles. My time is pretty slow, but that factor does not even come up in the conversation. He’s just pleased to imagine me on the lake trail, in the Colorado sunshine.
I just continue to do my thing. Mostly 4 - 5 miles walking or 18+ miles indoor biking, or sometimes both in addition to rowing less often (my shoulder has been bothering me lately), and light weights several days a week.
As the holidays approach I’ve given up worrying about nutrition, and we definitely up the alcohol consumption. Will worry about it startling the 4th or 5th of January.
I definitely wish I could eat like my kids. I used to be very thin, as they are now, and ate whatever I wanted, but as the years progress I have to pay more attention.
No necessary prescriptions besides allergy meds, and I count that as a success also. Gotta celebrate small successes.
Happy Holidays everyone!
I have felt a bit sluggish on my runs the last week or so. I feel fine otherwise, am sleeping well and continue to practice yoga. I think it’s all of the candy, cookies and other sugar filled items I have been eating lately. I need to go on a sugar detox in January.
I allowed myself some off days during the holidays. Had a great workout yesterday, but a couple of hours later the sides of my left leg really hurt. It’s like I sat on my leg wrong and then it hurt standing up. A little better today.
I have not been exercising much, since wind and/or cold has deterred me from running. Starting to use the trainer bike a bit and many days I do short Fitness Blender videos (arms, leg stretching). Honestly I think there are more minor aches and pains in the aging body when NOT running… maybe a circulation thing? It’s not bad enough to even consider taking an advil, just enough to remind me that if I am ever sore from running it’s probably just fine.
Yeah, that’s why I am wondering whether to do another workout today … maybe it’ll feel better when it gets warmed up. I definitely have had overuse injuries in the past. This doesn’t feel like that.
Maybe you can find a different workout today that does not risk the leg? Or a day of rest could make sense. Perhaps the more seasoned exercisers can chime in.
Been a good week. Monday we did 4 miles along the Potomac, Wednesday we did 4ish walking a greenway into downtown Roanoke, Thursday was another 4 along another greenway, and today was 3 5 in a cool chunk of land preserved by The Nature Conservancy
Played 110 minutes of soccer this AM. We did the usual pick-up thing of calling “last play” at 90 minutes but “last play” means a goal or something similar, so we ended up playing 20 more minutes.
I decided to start my new workout today vs tomorrow. I managed to strain my good leg glute doing nothing and it killed me Friday taking down Xmas decorations carrying boxes up and down at least 50 flights of stairs. So I skipped Saturday and figured I’d do Monday’s workout Sunday. With the new format I wasn’t sure how long it would take and didn’t want to be rushed before work.
And of course, it had to be pouring rain for my run. Can’t complain but so much since it barely rained in 2021. We were down over 20" for the year. And it was in the 60s so it wasn’t cold. But it wasn’t fun. I cut it short to 6 miles and changed my clothes and shoes to lift. Lifting was awkward. I haven’t had to strip and load weights in a few years. Must say it’s a lot easier picking up a different dumbbell. It didn’t feel like I did much. I’m used to a lot of volume in a short time, but I can tell my body is going to be sore tomorrow.
Tomorrow is a.mobility day. And while I’d run and do cardio, it supposed to be pouring rain again and now in the 30s. Thinking about just doing the workout and then a very short 20 min run after. Hate running last but I can suffer for 20 min in cold rain if a hot shower is waiting.
