Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Walked 4.5 miles with a friend yesterday, and other random stuff over the day. Today I had a pickleball lesson, then played for close to 2 add’l hours. Now time for chores.

I went swimming this morning, about 45 minutes. This coming week, I should be able to swim everyday since I won’t have to go shopping for food anymore. Just pull stuff out from my freezer.

don’t you love pickleball? I’ve become obsessed.

Wednesday was my one day a week that sneak in the bench press. My exercise program doesn’t call for much, if any, bench pressing.

Then I worked on some gymnastic skills followed by my first 5K row on the ERG in a really long time. The whole time I kept thinking to myself, “Gosh, I’d rather run a 5K than row a 5K.” So much work, but in the end, the irony was that my 5K row time was right about my 5K run time. Just seems like WAY more work involved.

Yesterday, I decided to take a day off from exercise, since my last day off was Sunday 8/14. Body wasn’t “feeling it.” Last Sunday, I ran the 5K Bay trail. 82 degrees and no wind.

Back to the “salt mines” today.

Yes! I just started a few months ago, and now I play twice a week, for 2 hours at a time. Sometimes I play more, but those are scheduled days with a regular group.

Checking in. Phase 3 is no joke. I forgot that it kicks my butt. Or maybe I repressed the memory. 2 more weeks of phase 3, and then peak week to go. Running has been going relatively well. Earlier this week, I ran a hilly route - multiple loops in the neighborhood behind me - that I haven’t done in over a year. I purposely didn’t look at my watch throughout because I didn’t want to be depressed. But the first loop was spot on, or even a little faster, than I "used to " (in the recent future, not at my best), on my first lap. But then, it’s weird… and I’ve noticed this for all my runs lately. My whole running life, if I did a route like this, every loop would be ~30 sec faster (over ~2 miles) without much effort. This time, it was like 5. I don’t seem to have any extra gears… I don’t mind at the moment. I was just thrilled I felt good on that route, but it’s weird. Then later in the week, I did an out-back (plus w/u and c/d) where I used to average (again in recent years) 17:30-20:00. This time it was 19:30/18:30. So I’m definitely getting there. Today was super easy because my legs were just beat. Of course, the lifting video was “booty” which really means legs/butt, lol…Tomorrow is a “long run for me now” day.

Birthday is in a few weeks. I somehow don’t think I’ll get my yoga progression down. Maybe before I’m 51… But, my handstands are much more controlled, and I have some control coming down in a tuck. I just always tap my toes before popping back up into crow. Today, I think I had my hips/gravity center shifting better on the way down, but I chickened out and did an awkward sideways plop instead. lol…

Work is irritating the snot out of me lately, and it’s clouding everything… grumble…

Key to a long life is moderation, 110, oldest living person from GB.

Checking in. Since we got back from vacation, I’ve been playing soccer 2X a week and we’ve had our 2 different dinner walks. Weather has been gross so we’ve just gone direct to both so just 1 and 2 miles respectively.

Tonight we went in-person to a long-time favorite where the round trip walk is 3 miles.

On Power 9-- I feel like I’ve got all but 4,5,6 down reasonably well.

I think #6 on the Power 9 is absolutely BS. Show me the data that someone with more than “moderate” alcohol consumption has a lower lifespan.

I’d challenge my fitness level, body fat % and almost any other stat against others in my age group even though I fail #class-2026

Looking back over the last 8 days.

Day 1 (last Sunday) 3 margs and 3 shots
Day 3 (Tuesday) 4 beers
Day 6 (Friday) 3 Beers
Day 8 (today) 3 margs and 3 shots.

This is my typical consumption during a week and I have no issues with it.

Hey I don’t take these things seriously, I hope that’s my key to longevity. I have one grandfather who was very easy going, he died in his sleep in his 90s, quite healthy before that, didn’t take modern medicine either, he did drink but not a heavy drinker.

Today I went for a 40 minutes swim, and in the afternoon, I moved one citrus tree, it was stuck in a bad spot, I moved it to a large container. That was a lot of work, the clay was hard, the tree has roots every where. I can see why my husband didn’t like moving plants, he left it up to me to do all the exercises, lol.

Unfortunately, that’s not a very distinguished group (i.e., others in your or my age group, if different).

America, as a whole, is growing in more ways than one. I compare myself against those who compete, whether in running, lifting weights, body composition, etc. The general population is too far out of shape for any meaningful comparison IMO.

I am a 45-year-old woman who is not usually very athletic. But my skin is in great shape. The secret to staying young is to take supplements that make my skin moist and shiny, and they also contain harmless chemicals like P-toluenesulfonic Acid. But as I get older, I find that relying on cosmetics alone is not enough. Athleticism is the secret to staying young. So I will keep running in the future.[Toluene Sulfonic Acid][Toluene Sulfonic Acid]

Actually @jmnva06 you’re pretty close to the moderate level. For men, it’s up to 14 drinks a week, but no more than 4 drinks at once. (women are 7 per week/3 at once) You’re fine with the 14, but a bit over on your Sundays. I’d call it good.

But in any case, I don’t put much thought into lists like that. I’m all for doing what works for you. If aiming to hit something on that list makes you happy and feel better about yourself, by all means - go for it! If not, don’t worry about it. There’s not one list that will fit 100% of the population.

I probably fail on most of those items, and I’m mostly good with it. But the older I get, the more I resent articles and people tell me that I need this big social network and social relationships. That might be true for 95% of the population, but it definitely is not what I need. And I resent being made to feel that something is wrong with me if that is the case. But, I do realize people need to write stuff like that to stay employed and feed their families, so there is that. I can just ignore.

I would rather strive to do what makes me happy and feel good. If it means I’ll live 5 years less, so be it. I’d rather do that than live 5 years longer and be miserable trying to do the “right thing.”

I think the key to a long life is to enjoy your life, what’s the point of having a long miserable life.

My plan is to live a long enjoyable life and not be miserable at all. It’s not a binary choice IMO. Live a shorter life, but enjoy it or live a longer life, and have the last years be miserable. I don’t accept those two choices as being my only ones.

Within the past 2-3 weeks, my training block produced several PR’s. I eat and drink for performance and health. And I enjoy every bit of my life.

Today, I start my new semester of workouts via the university. I’ve been really consistent all summer in doing “something” and closing my rings other than when I had Covid, but I’m kind of looking forward to a little more structure. I’m doing 3x/week prerecorded classes and one is aerobic, one is all weights and one is a combo. I’ve been doing fewer weights and riding the stationery bike more. Looking forward to cooler weather and more outside time.

Just thought I’d pipe in to say I’ve had a really good couple of days running. The segment last week where I went 19:30/18:30, this morning I ran that part in 18:55/18:00. And then I also dropped 30 secs from the 2.25 mile segment to the gym yesterday. Yay. I’m getting there! Ache and pain index has been hovering very low as well. Lifting has been fine. 2.5 weeks to go until the end of the program

I have the day off. Did some dusting and went for a walk. Now I’m trying to get the energy to vacuum/mop the kitchen before taking a shower. And then I’ll be a bum for most of the rest of the day.

Great progress!

I’ve been having horrible itchy eyes (even with allergy meds) this week. I did run/bike once and bike once, but I’ve not been taking advantage of the cooler weather as much as I’d like.

It’s been hot here and I’ve been swimming everyday, such a treat, cold water on a hot day. Other than that not much gardening because it’s hot, in the 90s here. Try to stay cool. Luckily I did move something when it was cool last week.

Played an hour of tennis last night, felt good. Other than that and my daily walks, haven’t been as active as I’d like this week. It’s been super hot, works is extremely busy, and getting D20 ready to move up to her apartment this weekend + visiting my father in rehab every other day has pretty much sapped all of my available time and energy. Looking forward to a calmer week and (hopefully) cooler weather next week, so I can get out there again.
