I have a very low GPA-about an 82%. My SAT, however, is very good, on the old SAT I got 740 M, 680 CR, and on the new SAT I got 721 M, 710 CR. Can anyone weigh in on good colleges where I might have a chance? Thanks a lot in advance!!
Home state?
How much can you and your parents afford?
Types of schools? Large/Small? Private/Public/Religious?
Try the SuperMatch feature on this website.
Thanks! I hadn’t been aware of that feature, I’ll definitely be using it! We can afford up to $30k a year before going into debt, my home state is PA, and it really doesn’t matter to me what the size of the school is or how big a school it is.
I would think some of the SUNYs, the PASSHE schools.
Apply DUS and Summer Session to Penn State University Park, (choosing an alternate campus), complete the essay carefully, before November 1st. GPA is 2/3 of the decision so you’re starting at a disadvantage, but with these stepts (DUS, summer session, essay, deadline), you give yourself a chance.
Apply to Temple, too.
IUP is another instate possibility. Add SUNY Albany, SUNY Oswego, SUNY New Paltz, Ohio University, UMD-BC, Towson for large publics. UNC Wilmington and Appalachian State, both in North Carolina, also like high scores even if you have a B/B- GPA.
Run the NPC’s to see which ones are within budget.
Private colleges (run the NPC, most of these “discount”): Muhlenberg, Lebanon Valley, Moravian, Drew, Goucher, Wheaton MA, Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster, Hobart&William Smith, Colby-Sawyer, St Bonaventure, Siena.
How is your class rigor? In my experience that is important too. My son with about similar stats but high rigor (and fives in some hard APs) got accepted in a few flagships such as UMD-CP, UMass Amherst, University of Minnesota TC and also a couple private schools with 35% acceptance rate. He had great extracurricular though that tied very well with his future major. In general I think uneven apps are hard to predict and I would suggest to apply early action or rolling to a few school so you can see how your app is viewed early on. Then you have some time to apply to more schools accordingly for regular decision.
