Fitting in as an Asian at Villanova

Hey guys! I am a low-income Asian Community College student (incoming sophomore) and I applied to transfer to Villanova. I’m from NC (been here for 3 years after I moved from the Philippines) and I applied to Villanova because 1) it is a Catholic School. Although I am not super religious, I think it’s good to be in a school that puts values into greater consideration than most schools. 2) Fairly good rankings and not too hard to get into 3) athletics are great and I would like to continue cheerleading there 4) I am a city girl and I have been looking to transfer out of state!

I’ve been reading many articles and forums about Villanova and I’m starting to feel a little iffy about transferring because of the lack of diversity and the stereotype of VU being a school full of white rich kids. I won’t really be able to accurately gauge how bad it is until I actually experience it, but I want to hear from other people and try to make up the most of it and see if VU is a good fit for me.

I think I’ll be able to make a good amount of friends, plus I like to party, but will money really be an issue? I dress up when I have to and when I go out, but I definitely would not dress up on a daily basis to go to class (which I read was a thing at VU). Do people make fun of those who dress lazily? Is there a good community for minorities? Are the rich kids snobby? Does discrimination based on race and income have a great presence on campus?

Please let me know as much as you can about your experience and life as a minority in Villanova. Thank you!!

Hello, I am in the same boat as you I, too have an Asian family who is low income but went to a state school. I think with the diversity of Villanova you will fit in just fine! I have seen that the people are hospitable and nice and college student tends to be more welcoming. I am attending in the fall so you can contact me if you want to talk.

I’m so glad to hear that! This post has been empty for a while. I do hear both good and bad things at Nova which is kinda nerve wracking but yeah, I would love to get in touch! Although I’m not quite sure how to do that on here haha

Of course! We can try to contact in a social media if that is okay?

I wasn’t super religious nor Catholic, but I ended up spending a boatload of my time outside of class with Campus Ministry. The school does a great job helping you find the person you want to be and the values that are important to you if you put yourself out there.

Diversity in terms of race is what it is, lacking, similar to most private schools out there. Diversity in terms of life experiences is vast, you would be surprised at the some of the things your peers have experienced in life.

I rolled out of bed and wore a sweater and sweats to class half the time like a decent amount of kids; no one cares what you wear. I remember knowing a kid who wore plain clothes (sweats, tshirt, etc.) everyday and being shocked to learn that his family was extraordinarily wealthy a few months later.

Speaking from my 4 years spent at Nova, you can private message me if you have more questions.

@jngu1998 absolutely! That would be great!

Current rising junior here. Our school has a Multicultural Student Union which promotes diversity on campus and works with all of the multicultural student organizations to do so. The school definitely has a diverse community, you just have to find it first. At first glance the school may seem extremely white but the Filipino American Student Association is very active on campus and they do a great deal to showcase the Filipino culture. From my experience, it is very easy to find people of different backgrounds as long as you keep an open mind. My 4 person apartment next year consists of my three friends who are vietnamese, black, indian, and I am a Filipino. So I’d say don’t worry about fitting in. I have friends from many cultures!

I’m not sure that your post is delivering the message that you intended to communicate.
