<p>Hi. I am a white caucasian male, out of state, considering enrolling in the rutgers pharmacy program for fall 2011 as a freshman. One thing I have noticed through lots of research and visiting the school is that there seem to be a lot of asians and indians in the program. Let me first say I have no problem with people of other ethnicities, I'm just concerned about being able to fit in. For those of you in the pharmacy program (of any race), do you see this as an issue? Are people very cliquey? Do you think I will have a problem making friends if I'm one of the only white people (and am out of state)? I know you end up making friends with people outside of the pharmacy program too, but I know after 2 years you are with them a lot, and I am also interested in living on Busch.</p>
<p>It’s only awkward if you make it awkward. There will always be the select asian kids who prefer hanging out with asian kids and the indians who do the same, but Rutgers is huge! There is a very large amount of asians/indians on Busch campus, but there’s a fair amount of caucasians as well. (so you won’t be the “only white person”)</p>
<p>You’ll be taking your prereqs for your first few years, so you’re definitely going to meet people outside of your major. Also, doing extracurriculars is a great way to meet people.</p>
<p>Don’t worry about the race thing. Rutgers is known for its diversity. If you’re a friendly person, that’s enough!</p>
<p>I know I sound bad but I know that the same hesitation might occur for an asian or indian going somewhere where there are primarily whites (who are often notorious for being cliquey). It’s just that I live in a very white neighborhood and am just not used to racial diversity.</p>
<p>I understand where you are coming from. But at the pharmacy open house, they gave a handout that broke down the ratio. It’s something like 60% Asian, 40% White, and 10% Other. So, if that’s right, it’s not really an overwhelming majority.</p>
<p>If you’re open to it, get ready to make some asian friends
As with any people, they can seem cliquey but if both sides put in the effort to become friends, it’s very rewarding. but yes, if you look around the lecture hall (in the professional years) it is mostly asian and I do see white people together but it’s not because they’re white but because they’re grads. If anything, the majority of the class will be female and so the cliques, if any, would be female cliques.</p>
