I'm a sophomore in HS but I've started looking at colleges and Tulane's been on my list for a while now. I would love to be in New Orleans for cultural aspects - the French Quarter, cafes, small bookstores, etc. But I know a lot of people go there for partying, which I'm not really into. Parties are fun for the social aspect, but I'm totally against drinking, drugs, smoking, casual sex...I'd much rather be with friends at home, seeing a movie, going out to dinner or to a cafe, etc. But I don't think I'm really that much of a nerd? (haha) I don't want to be in the Honors program/the Honors dorm, so my question is: Are there people in Tulane who don't like to party, but aren't the type of people to sit at home and study all day? Thanks :)

Against alcohol/drugs/smoking/sex? You're a sophomore in high school. Your outlook will change very soon.

But to answer your question, yes you'll find an intellectual crowd, judging from what I learned on from A) the tour and B) friend who's a freshman. There's the Wall dormitory which is predicated on the concept of an "intellectual community." You and your dorm mates meet each week and discuss things like politics. And I hear that Wall has some of the nicest dorms on campus.

I didn't engage/approve of alcohol/drugs/smoking/casual sex as a sophomore in HS, and today as a second semester senior I still don't find any of that appealing.

And I'm in the same situation as you, jcdancer. I much prefer a laid back evening with a few close friends or doing something more interesting than drinking. Tulane's a very good possibility for me; it's only an hour away and I got 24k/yr...but I'm worried about if I'll fit in or not. I don't want to seem antisocial if I don't go to the same or as many parties as the people around me.

tben - haha :P maybe your right about my outlook changing. but thanks for the advice about wall, that seems really cool.

tigerlily123 - i'm glad someone feels the same! i'm sure you'll make the right decision.

you sound rather... boring. why deprive your self of some of the finer activities of college? have you ever even tried drinking? probably not.

i hope there's more people in the class of '13 who will get ****faced at the boot with me and help me find my way back to the dorms lol.

se

jc - You'll be fine. One characteristic of Tulane is the prevalence of off-campus housing. (That's one reason the campus is so compact!) Tulane has many types of kids, and I don't know anyone who's uncomfortable with dorm living. But if that turned out to be the case it's easy to find housing in the surrounding neighborhood. Good luck with your decision!

There's plenty of things to do without drinking. You will experience people with booze all the time, even in their dorms, but for the most part, people only get caught if they vommit.

Wall would probably be the best dorm for someone like the OP. You do have to live on-campus for two years, unless your parents live locally.

Thanks for the responses! :)

Yes just a clarification you do have to live on-campus for two years, but there are definitely options to where you can live. Butler, the honors dorm, isn't restricted to honors students, so you could live there if you wanted. Wall is really nice - everyone I know there loves it - and don't worry, you don't HAVE to participate in the activities they have. It's also not called an "intellectual" dorm - it's geared toward community living and a bigger student involvement here BEYOND the academic world. There's also JL, where I live now, which is the women-only freshman/sophomore dorm. It's really quiet but has fun activities.

I do have to tell you though that most of the students here like to go out, like to party. You'll find people with the same interests as you, definitely, but this is a party city. A lot of the social scene is geared toward drinking. Having said that, though, we're not in the middle of a rural area. We're in a city that has its own unique culture and so many things to do other than drink! You'll love Tulane no matter what

Thanks trackie, I didn't know that about Butler. I was thinking about the all girls dorm but I'm not sure if I'd like to be cut off from guys completely. I mean, partying is fun for the social part, I'm just not into drinking or drugs. But I'm not a total nerd who cuts herself off from other people or anything lol.

You should note that JL is pretty "far" from the other dorms and it's the fathest away from the buildings in the academic quad. The other dorms are close to the University Center and dining hall, but JL is by Newcomb (home to most liberal arts classes). Jones (social sciences/liberal arts) and the library are about the same distance from any dorm.
