Fiu vs. Fau

I'm from New York and i want to leave to go to college.

I want to major in Finance and minor in international business.

I was looking into Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University.

I was wondering if anyone from the Florida area can tell me how's the Miami and Boca Raton area, and how do they differ ?

what's the job market like full-time and part-time ? Is the cost of living cheap ? apartments ? groceries ? car insurance ? etc.

Also is there a future in the business industry there such as hedge funds, private equity, and investment banking.

I would appreciate all of the information i could get on these two areas even if i didn't ask something specifically thanks.

It depends on where you want to be. If you are coming to Florida from New York, you have to realize that FIU is in Miami and FAU is in Boca Raton, which is in the middle of nowhere. FIU was rated one of the largest schools in the nations in terms of enrollment. There is a major difference between Boca and Miami. There are lots of jobs in Miami and Miami Beach, the cost of living in Miami is not bad, but you can stay on campus.

Oh alright … Which is a better school academic wise ? And is off campus housing cheap compared to long island NY apartments out here start around $1200 … Which has a better party scene ? And do you know about the business industry out there ? Like with Private equity, Hedge funds, and investment banking. Or corporate business such as finance . Any answer are appreciated thanks.

Junior at FIU here:

If you’re going to minor in international business, hands down choose FIU.

But to answer your questions:

Campus housing:
Cheapest are usually in Fontainebleau area (aprox 8-10 minute drive NE of campus). You may find something for approx $900-$1000 for a 1/1–though sometimes difficult. Most students I know share a 2/2 for $600-$700/person.

Better party scene:
Think Boca (FAU) as more of a chic Boston pub-type atmosphere… bars with mostly young sophisticated professionals in their late 20’s, 30’s and 40’s drinking high-end beers… and lots of sports bars. Think Miami (FIU) as much more diversed. Party scene is either at ‘the grove’ (Coconut Grove) or ‘the beach’ (South Beach)–in both scenes you’ll have drug dealers rubbing elbows with CFO’s… rubbing elbows with PhD’s… all to salsa music lol.

Business industry in Miami is focused in the Brickell area–a 25 minute drive from FIU. FIU gets huge endowments from international firms and recently built an awesome business building with a ‘capital markets lab’ --whatever that means (I’m a psych major). Their finance club (FMA&FIU) has their own hedge fund ‘sub-club’ that invests real money which is pretty cool.

Alright thanks for that info.

Is Fontainebleau a good area ? Lol you said CFO’s rub elbows with drug dealers at parties in Miami. Are they corrupt ? or jus like to have fun ? And also is that really a big drug area ?

And oh alright that is cool with the hedge funds so since they have there own hedge fund sub-club does the hedge fund recruit from Fiu ?
And finally would it make more sense to go to a NY College for a year or two then transfer to Fiu ? Or would it be easier to go directly out for my freshman year ?

My apologies, apparently it’s not a ‘hedge fund’ rather an investment club…

Here’s more info on the club and the capital market lab: [Capital Markets Lab. Florida International University. College of Business.](http://business.fiu.edu/cml/smif.html)

Fun link: [url=<a href=“http://business.fiu.edu/cml/media.html]Capital”>http://business.fiu.edu/cml/media.html]Capital Markets Lab. Florida International University. College of Business./url

Fontainbleau is an ok area. I don’t live there but from what I’ve heard the main problem is noisy neighbors.

About corruption/drug dealers… meh I was kinda exaggerating to prove a point lol. But yeah definitely South Beach gets a bit crazy. FIU has plenty of EC’s and fun stuff in campus so it’s not like you must go to SoBe to party… or even have a car… Dolphin Mall just 10 mins north has a nice night life (bars, salsa club, bowling, etc)… and lots of FIU students go there.

Oh another thing about housing… a friend of mine pays $400/month for her own bed/bath in a 4 bed/4 bath house… shared among 4 students… so the whole big-house-lotta-roommates thing may be the cheapest option. Why not just live in-campus… they’re pretty nice and only $2.5-3.5k/semester.

Not sure about the transfer question.

Oh alright thanks that information really helped a lot. When do you think would be the best time for me to come down and visit the school ? So i would get the actual feel i would have as if i were there on a normal day ?

Hmm… any Monday-Thursday of the semester will do.

Okay … And another thing are freshman required to love on campus at Fiu ?

Nope. The majority of students, including freshman, are locals living with their parents.

Oh alright that’s good … Because if i get accepted and decide to go I’ll be looking for off campus housing. I have a question but do you know anything about te business major/field ?

Does fiu have a policy on freshman not being able to have a car and do freshman have to live on campus ?

Freshman don’t have to live on campus. There is no policy regarding freshmen not being able to have a car.

Alright thanks … Idf your not from dlorida is it worth going to Fiu

Alright thanks … If your not from florida is it worth going to Fiu ?

For your majors i’d definitely suggest FIU, as for if it’s worth leaving the state, it depends if you got scholarships and pell grants. The only problem is the first year of tuition will be about twice as much since you’re an out of state resident, but after living here for a year (make sure to document when you start living here) you can apply as a florida resident and tuition is relatively cheap for all you’re getting. Obviously money wise, staying put is good for long term, but for the whole experience, moving down here is not a bad idea and you will probably benefit from it.

Okay thanks i’ve been wanting to leave NY for a while now i just done want to move somewhere just as expensive ; i went on payscale and did the cost of living calcualator and ir seems to be cheaper in Miami then Long Island. Does Fiu give out there own scholarships or would i have to look for 3rd party ones ? Do you go to Fiu ? If so do you see many job openings in the finance field and would Miami be a good place to open a business ?

Anyone can drive a car in FIU, if they have a license… FIU hands down is WAY better than FAU… I’ve driven by FAU loads of time driving up North, and I can Personally say that FAU is in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!

How is the florida college life compared to other states ?

FAU is in the middle of nowhere? Are you out of your mind? Boca Raton is a city of 350k people. It’s a suburban campus. And it’s right by the beach.
