Fl. class ranking question? Can this be correct?

Does anyone know how Florida [collier county] ranks the HS senior class? My daughter found out today she is in the top 11% of her class. She has taken many AP classes [all others were honors if offered], yet she has a friend whom has never taken any AP classes [only honors] and he has a higher ranking. How can this be fair? I intend seek clarification from her GC but was eager to see if anyone here knew how ranking worked.

It depends on what grades she gets. A B in an AP class is worth less than an A in an honors class GPA-wise. So if your daughter has received some Bs and her friend has received mostly As, that could be why.

Well, in my county (palm beach), an A in and honors class weighs the same as a B in an AP class. A reason why could be that your county doesn't rank by weighted GPA.

At our HS, a B in an AP class is worth 4.0 and an A in an honors class is worth 4.5. If your goal was the highest GPA possible, you would only take AP classes that you were sure you would get an A in. (However, since the school doesn't rank, people do not tend to worry very much about GPA.)

Is your HS profile on your school district's web site? The ranking system might be explained there.

Want to know what's crazy? At my school, AP and Honors are weighted the same...

They're basically saying, "Hello, our classes are as good as college level classes."

Awful.

There should be something in writing about how your school weights grades. We used to get a little booklet every year with all the requirements, grading policies etc. At our local high school regular classes are on a 4 point scale and an AP class just adds .03 to the GPA. So a B in an AP class drops the GPA below a 4 point unless there are mainly AP classes with As so .03s added offset the grade loss from the B. Most other high schools in the state grade APs on a 5 point scale.

Yes, I found the info. Thanks everyone. Go figure.... less points for challenging yourself. That is Florida....
