Flagship state university expensive for you? Calling middle class caught in middle

Mini, I see that stdents are voting with their feet and not looking at Everstoned State. It's time the state took back this school and made it something useful for the growing state student population. It's a 60's indulgence.

Same at Western Washington; Central, Eastern, and, when you take out-of-state applicants, and out-of-state transfers, UW as well. I know - all 60s indulgences, especially Eastern in Spokane, that special hotbed of radicalism.

What's happened at all of them (though least at UW, where the richest students go) is students can no longer afford them. The high school graduation classes are the largest in the state's history; the community colleges are jammed. Tuitions have been rising 8-10% a year; cost of living added on to that. Pell Grants barely changed, and fewer eligible. Loans more difficult to get.

mini, Yes it was successful b/c my son did have 3 private school options. He chose an oos public school to attend instead. I think that he chose wisely from his options.

Nobody wants to go to Eastern (Cheney), it's hard enough to fill Wazzu. Evergreen has an attractive location near the population center and a nice little town. My understanding is that Western and UW are turning away far better applicants than they used to so it's not a problem for them to fill classes.
Face it, the Evergreen model is a passe as your Sgt Pepper jacket.

"Nobody wants to go to Eastern (Cheney), it's hard enough to fill Wazzu."

Excuses, excuses. You mean those nice Republican types out in eastern Washington want to keep their kids barefoot and pregnant? Or are cow colleges passe? (my younger d. enjoyed the heck out of her music camp at Wazzu, and wish they'd ever have such a thing on this side of the mountains.)

It would be a nice theory - except Western is also seeing an application decline, as is UW. Evergreen doesn't have any problem filling classes. (Central is very worried, though). UW will fill theirs with OOS applicants, who bring them bucks.

If your theory was true, Pitzer and Earlham wouldn't be among the hottest colleges in America.

Apps are up at Wazzu but it took some marketing. They had record enrollment last year with better stats. What do some tiny privates 1,000+ miles away have to do with public schools in Washington? Quit trying to shift the subject. We are discussing one western Washington school that is not pulling its weight for students who prefer this side of the mountains. I'd give it to WSU and let them run WSU west.

momoffive (momof7here), If you are really concerned about the cost, I'm pretty sure it is not too late to get into U. of OK--they will take late applications from NMFs. I think you have until the 19th of April to designate the school for NMF.
My kid didn't even want to look at it, but he and H were very pleasantly surprised with OU. Look up their website. Call their National Scholars office on Monday and see what they can do for you.

"We are discussing one western Washington school that is not pulling its weight for students who prefer this side of the mountains."

Who's "we", kimosabe? Just because the cow colleges can't get those east side Republicans to attend, why do YOU want to change the subject?

Because I brought up Evergreen only Evergreen. The rest is noise.

Knock, knock, knock....uhhh....... is this still on? waaay back when, waaaay before the barbed wire death match over Evergreen ;) , I was asked whether Yale or Colgate was most generous to my D (by $14K). The poster was wondering whether Yale's endowment could explain the difference. Nope. Colgate was the generous one. ;) 3 other privates beat Yale's need calculations by over $10k/yr. Yale was down-right chintzy by comparison. YMMV, but if you own a farm/ranch or business, I wouldn't count on it, and I own both.

Hey, they wanted your farm, and were betting they could get it! ;)

Congrats on disappointing them!

We got bored with contrasting and conflicting tales of aid awards.

Leave it to Barrons to turn this into a stupid conversation somehow tied to politics...

OK, back to the topic. If you can't afford your state school you need to work harder and get a better job. How's that?

Real sensitive, there Mr Barrons. Believe it or not many people are already working hard and doing the best they can in dealing with life's adventures.

Hey, barron's dig deep inside yourself. Real deep. No. Go past the self-directed pension plan. You know, in there where your heart should be . There. Now , do you have a smidgen of compassion left for those less fortunate than you? Are you really this ignorant of the plight of working and truly middle class people? The problems they have in achieving a quality education for their kids? Get a grip on reality, or better yet, ask the Wizard for a "Double OZ", a brain and a heart.

How's that?

Colgate was the generous one.

THat has been what we have heard as well

Has it occurred to anyone (speaking of Oz) that barrons is just a straw man?

Thanks for the info. about Yale and Colgate.

I just checked UT Austin's website, and it looks like tuition is now over $8000. a year (for Sciences)- plus approx. $7500 for R&B - (wait... I can add....) That's $15,500 a year - not including books, personal expenses, etc. OUCH! I remember when tuition was about $2000 a year. We will have one year with two in college at the same time - if DS attends UT I'm afeared our F.A. there will just consist of loans, loans, loans. After the dreaded two-in-college year, we can probably just handle that amount out-of-pocket. (Darn, I knew we should have moved to Georgia or Florida!) :)
I'm curious for other state flag-ship Universities: about what are y'all paying for tuition and fees? (I could search this on the web - but I'm a little lazy.)

Penn State T, R & B-- $19,169 (estimated for "06) and >$30K OOS.
