My son signed up for a FLC. I helped convinced him what a great idea it would be. While we could see who taught the seminar itself( we looked that prof up on Rate my professors, and liked), we couldnt find out who was teaching the other classes in that specific community. He asked FLC several times for that information and was never given it. Lo and behold – he registered today, and his teachers have the absolute WORST reviews on Rate My Professors ever! Across the board – every one, not average rating but HORRIBLE ones. A full 50% of the reviews for ALL the teachers - excluding the one leading the seminar say “Never take this class” or “worst teacher ever” and the like. If he had seen this he NEVER would have signed up for this. Is this why they dont tell us the other teachers, so tenured profs that have bad reputations can fill their classes? I feel totally misled, I would never have encouraged him to do this ( strongly, by the way), and worst of all-- instead of looking forward to his first year of college – he is completely dejected about his first semester, the absolute opposite effect I was hoping FLC would have on him. And now there is no way to get out of it-- is there? This is an absolute complete and utter disappointment, and so not the way he wanted to start. Would be interested to hear if anyone had this experience – and even more interested in finding out how he can get out of it! We are from California, he is leaving Alabama today, so is that it? Are we stuck? He is frustrated, angry…and crushed.

Just assuming FLC is Foreign Language… but he can change his schedule as much as he wants throughout the summer. He can drop the foreign language and add any other class he wants assuming there is space

Think FLC is freshman learning community
I would say try and re work schedule without FLC I do not think it is a binding committment

Ah. my bad yeah that makes more sense. I still offer the same advice though.

Dont worry! You can change your schedule all summer.

If you choose a class that is currently closed wait until the next Bama Bound, they have seats “frozen” for each Bama Bound!

The same thing happened to D last year and we checked in every so often for classes she was interested in…it all works out!

As soon as bama bound was over my son was able to change his schedule with no problems. He added a PE class also. I think you can re-work his schedule, just might have problems finding openings in classes he wants. You might have to be flexible there.

I thought the FLC WAS binding…if it isnt, then hope springs eternal!

I don’t think it’s “binding”, and if it is then the only binding part is the actual FLC class. The other classes he takes as part of the FLC should be able to be changed.

Your scenario is exactly why my son didn’t sign up for an FLC. After reading your post I’m glad we didn’t.

Just an FYI. The morning before each 2nd day of a Bama Bound additional classes are opened up. Jump on MyBama and use the drop add to make changes to his schedule as necessary. If you do it early in the morning you’ll get on before the new group of current Bama Bound students get to pick their classes. You can do this anytime of course, but the new seats are only added during Bama Bound sessions.

The reason why FLC cannot be binding is because students often need to substitute classes for ones that are listed. For example, if you are in the Honors College and already have credit for English 101, you would take 103. And several posters are correct. You can change his schedule anytime during the summer. My son, a rising sophomore, added and dropped a few classes already.

*We are from California, he is leaving Alabama today, so is that it? Are we stuck? He is frustrated, angry…and crushed. *

Who ever said that FLC is binding? I don’t think ANYTHING is binding at UA.

You don’t have to do FLC…just rework his schedule with teachers that you like.

Is your child in honors? If so, stop by the honors college and see if someone there can help get a better schedule.

Edgymama…

Just sent you a PM.

Don’t worry, this will get straightened out and your son will get a better schedule. :)

I can’t see what UA wouldn’t allow your son to choose other classes. What I didn’t like about FLC’s is that they all included either EN 101 or EN 103, which one already has credit for if they got a 4 or 5 on an AP English exam. Your son could probably go on myBama right now and remove those classes from his schedule (however, adding classes might be difficult at this time).

I think it’s going to all work out now that they know that he’s not locked into FLC.

However, since today was day 2 of BB, many classes are temporarily full. When day 2 of the next BB rolls around, more classes will open.

What FLC did he sign up for?

I did an FLC called “Mind and Brain” that was pretty dumb. I think the one-hour classes themselves are pretty worthless, or at least mine was. The two classes I took because of it were actually pretty good though.

Anyways, just drop it from your schedule, and drop those classes and add a class with a better prof, or whatever you want to take.

I was under the impression an FLC was not binding. However, I was also told that FLC’s were like a program and if you were to drop the FLC, you would drop most of your classes as well. I was told when I took mine that many of the classes I was taking had spots set aside for FLC students so that they would be assured a decent schedule with some of the same kids in many classes. One kid who was in my English class dropped his FLC, and the teacher of the class was wondering how he was still in the class because many of his classes should have dropped with his FLC

FLC is not binding.

Don’t worry. The OP and son have a new and better schedule…so all is well!! :)

M2CK is right – and in no small part to her support! Yes, FLC is non-binding-- we went back on and switched out of it. Son now has a great schedule that he loves-- he even said out loud “thank you” for all my help! ( I don’t get that very often).

I need to give a huge SHOUT-OUT to M2CK for her amazing help and making us see clear thorough the clouds. Her experience was invaluable in helping us sort out the all the options available to us. She is unbelievable – if she responds to a post of yours-- listen to her! She is the greatest! Momreads also joined in the fray as well. All this reaffirms that Alabama was a great choice for our family.

I think it might be helpful in the future if the school posted the the rest of the specific classes with teachers attached to the FLC so it was easier to sort out not only schedule but be aware of what teachers were attached to the course, to avoid surprises or last minute switches.

All’s well that ends well - Roll Tide!
