Alright, I lurk this forum a lot, but now that I'm really starting to narrow down the list, I'd like any suggestions for fleshing out my list.

Here's some basic info about me...

3.15 unweighted GPA, 3.6 ish weighted GPA
2040 SAT
32 composite ACT (I expect to raise this a couple points, now that I actually know what to expect on the math section)
780 SAT Subject test Biology E
720 SAT Subject test US History

I've got a couple leadership positions - one in marching band and one out of school organizing a group to volunteer at the local nature preserve.

I'm planning on majoring in Ecology/Environmental Studies as soon as I figure out which one appeals to my interests more.

A strong instrumental music department would be nice - I could music major, but don't want that lifestyle. Basically something for me to do as an extracurricular.

Colleges I'm applying to:

OSU
University of Dayton - my mom is a mathematics professor there
Earlham College
Oberlin is a bit of a reach, but I'll probably apply there

Those are really the four that I'm set on applying for, I just need to find others that suit my interests. Anywhere in Ohio area and surrounding states is fine, as well as New York, because I have relatives there.

Thanks for your time! Please tell me if you need more information.

Have you looked at Ohio-Wesleyan? Miami University of Ohio is good too. Those would be fits I would say

Definitely look at Kenyon! Fantastic school, great music department. You have good scores, I think you'd have a decent shot.

New York schools? Colgate is a great school that I think you could get into

I live in Ohio, so I'm fairly familiar with Ohio schools.

Look into Miami of Ohio, definitely, although it's got a reputation for being mostly white and preppy. I also second (third?) the Kenyon suggestion. You've got a shot there, and it's a really good LAC despite being kind of in the middle of nowhere.

If you want a good music conservatory, Oberlin is your best bet - I've heard their conservatory is one of the best in the country, let alone in Ohio.

You could also look into Wittenberg, a smallish LAC in Springfield, Ohio. One of my friends went there and she loves it, although I'm not sure how it fits with your interests and potential majors - it has a good biology program, I've heard.

As for surrounding states, look at U Pitt in western Pennsylvania and maybe some Indiana schools - I'm not too familiar with them - or Michigan schools like UMich and its campuses.

As for New York, there are so many good schools there. Fordham in NYC, although I've heard it tends to be full of rich Long Island Kids, for example. There's also Syracuse U and Ithaca College which has a great music program.

I'm not sure which school s are best for Ecology or Environmental Science, but there's a couple suggestions for you to look into, anyway. :)

I don't think I'd be able to get into UMich
Wittenberg is a nice university, but I didn't like the area and feel of the college.
Miami has a beautiful campus - I've been through there, and it's always a treat. They have a Judo team, which is a plus. I'll probably apply there.
Kenyon, while it looks good, is about as much (or more) of a reach than Oberlin. The same goes for Colgate, unfortunately.
Ohio-Wesleyan looks nice - does anyone have more information about it?

Thanks for the replies!

I've heard Ohio University isn't too bad, but depending on the department OSU and other schools in Ohio are probably a lot better. It is another school to look into though...

Ohio University blows every other college in Ohio out of the water when if comes to Journalism, but I'm not interested in that. OU's campus is also really nice. Still, it's more of a fall back option than a first choice.

Ohio U is an infamous party school in basically the middle of nowhere. Unless you're into journalism, you shouldn't go there.

I don't know much about Ohio Wesleyan, except that one of my friends will be going there this fall, and she's a very conservative super-religious type. I don't know if that's true for the whole school, but it does have a Methodist affiliation.

Also, have you thought about the College of Wooster? I was there for a writing contest once, and it has a really nice campus. It seems like one of the lesser-known Ohio colleges, but IMO it's also one of the better schools around here. You should research it further to know if it's right for you, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

One of my friends went to Illinois Wesleyan, and I think they're all the same affiliation. He is very Jewish, but didn't have a problem there and is now making six figures 2 years out of college designing stock-predicting programs. :-)

That's pretty darn good - I'm not too familiar with the [insert state]-Wesleyans, but six figures? Niiice.

Like I said, I don't know how much influence the Methodist affiliation has on the student body, but if you knew my friend who's going there, you'd be scared. ;) I'm sure the school on the whole isn't nearly as bad as she is.

Yeah... the wikipedia entry isn't screaming "CEDARVILLLE" at me, so I should be fine. Assuming I got accepted, that is.

Wooster also looks good - I think that I'm going to apply to a lot of these colleges, and maybe get accepted to one or two. Hopefully.

I think you should be fine for most of the schools that have been mentioned in this thread. You should definitely apply to Oberlin and Kenyon, too, because I think you've got a decent chance at getting in to at least one of the two.

Anyway, I hope I was of help. Good luck with your college search! :)

(And LOL at Cedarville - scary stuff!)

Thanks, you have helped a bunch. I really feel sorry for the admissions officers reviewing my application... High ACT, mediocre GPA. :-( I need really, really good interviews. :-P

highhopes,

your friends is among the 2% of very conservative folks at Ohio Wesleyan. the school is pretty darn liberal as a whole...

That's always a plus! :-)

I live near Yellow Springs, i.e. the now bankrupt Antioch U, and their pie chart would look pretty boring... all that same color of lime green. Too bad it's not up and running any more, because that town is the most beautiful college town I've ever seen.
