Flexibility of Regents research program

Hey! I just got accepted to UCSD as a bio major with a Regents scholarship. I read that Regents have the opportunity to do research their first quarter, which I think is really great. The only thing is, research is not really the direction I'm going now. So I was wondering what kind of flexibility Regents are given to plan their projects with a professor. Would a Regent be allowed to do some kind of independent study/project rather than research?

For example, I'm interested in science writing. Would I be able to do some kind of project in that?

Another question - does the research have to be in my major?

Weird question, I know, but I just want to make sure I understand my options as the college admissions season continues and gets more complicated. Thanks for the help :)

If you’re in biological sciences, you’re better off getting into their BS Scholars program.

Thanks for the reply! I searched the program but didn’t have much luck. How does it differ from the Regents research program?
