Floods threaten the University of Iowa

The Chemistry Building has not flooded and is not closed at this time. Your nephew should contact the faculty members of the specified department to ascertain the status of the internship. More personnel will be on campus beginning tomorrow. I do not have details but I would think that if the internship cannot be completed as planned on the UI campus, that it might take place elsewhere with the cooperation of other generous institutions.

The grim reality is now setting in and things will be difficult for some time to come. There are now 20 UI buildings with water but the water is being pumped out and dryers are being set up and recovery has started but it will be slow.

Thanks for the good wishes.

You realize that only about 2% of the midwesterners have flood insurance (CNN)? Katrina will be nothing compared to the displaced people from these floods. The older folks won't be able to rebuild even with low interest loans. This is a real disaster, because so many places flooded that have never flooded before.

I saw a news report today that a dorm that housing 1,000+ students will not be available at U of I for the fall semester due to the flooding, and that it is 19% of their dorm beds. They are going to have a lot of hurdles to overcome.
