My roomie and I bought a super cute five-headed (octopus) lamp for our dorm room. The heads are plastic (and different hues of pink- adorable). However, I have heard rumors that these lamps are not allowed in the dorms b/c they are a fire hazard- the only lamps that are supposedly okay are the ones with stainless steel heads. Still, our lamp only takes regular 40WATT lightbulbs, not the dangerous halogen ones. Shouldn't we be okay? I will be heartbroken if we have to return it. : ( Thanks!

cat - my d had the same exact floor lamp last year....except all her shades were white plastic. Loved the fact that she could turn on some of the lamps and leave some off depending on how much light she needed.

No one asked her to remove it, though I would be very careful that higher wattage bulbs don't end up in there accidentally...and that clothes or towels are not hung on it or near it. It's tempting since the thing kinda reminds of a coat rack...lol! (ldgirl had a scarf hung on hers and it started smoking!!) She actually used 25 watt bulbs instead of the recommended 40 watt bulbs just to be extra safe. When all lamps are turned on that is 125 watts of light which is pretty bright.

Not sure if there has been a change of policy since last year. I'd call housing to make sure.

OMG!!!! I'm definitely getting 25 watt bulbs to be safe. I will still take it, and unless the RA tells me otherwise, we're keeping it, lol. My mom actually took all the heads off it so we wouldn't attract attention moving in, haha: ). Thanks, ldmom!

I lived in a dorm last year where three rooms on my hall had that lamp... One of them caught on fire so I understand the fire hazard concern. The other two were fine the whole year though, it probably depends mostly on the bulb wattage. I know one of the rooms that didn't have any problems only kept three bulbs in the lamp tree rather than the full five it could hold.

no on halogen but i think otherwise ok.
