My son is a freshman at UF and his account says that tuition is due this Friday, 8/31. His Florida Bright Futures money has still not been credited to his account. Does anyone know when this will happen? Will it happen before the deadline so that I can just pay the difference or should we apply for a deferral?

I would suggest for your son to stop by the financial aid office for some clarification. Most offices that have verification that a scholarship, grant or loan is expected will not hold late fees against the student. But make sure to get verification in writing from someone should it not be dispersed in time.

He needs to go by the Financial Aid office in Criser Hall ASAP. You should also call the Bright Futures people and make sure everything is right on their end.

My BF has been showing for months now…

Last year BF disperments came in on the 31st of August.

My son has Bright Futures as well. They said there were going to defer his tuition but then they didn’t. They paid it out of his financial aid loan and now when Bright Futures funds there will be no charges to pay. Does the Bright Futures sit there as a credit? Another poster said they will send him a check, that that’s what they did last year. I hope so. The financial aid office told him they wouldn’t mail him a check. So I have no idea what’s going to happen.

Thanks for the information, everybody. My son just received an e-mail today stating that his tuition wouldn’t be due until October because of his financial aid, even though his account states that tuition is due Friday. The notification says that he won’t have to pay any late fees, either.

I am so frustrated!! My son also has Bright Futures and they said they would delay payment until October but then paid it in full out of his student loan! Grrr!

Check your UF account info…BF was awarded today. And refund went through too. Hope yours comes through today too…nice to not think about it over the long weekend! Good Luck!

Don’t forget that you still will get it even though your loans paid your tuition. It just disburses straight to your account. Then can’t take it away just because your loans paid your tuition because it’s included in your estimated cost of attendance.

Thank you, I just checked and it said they issued a direct refund to his account it just hasn’t posted to Wells Fargo yet. It aggravated me though because they said they would WAIT for the financial aid and then they didn’t, they took the whole thing out of his loan. It’s all a learning curve for us, we’ll be better prepared for next time around!

Yeah they disburse the loans and turner grants the first week so if you have any of those they will always go directly to your account but after the charges are paid any other disbursements that are made later on will eventually go to your account. It usually takes 2-4 days to get the money after they make the disbursement announcement.

But, they decided to do it on the Friday before Labor Day weekend, so it will probably be closer to a week…

Oh yeah I didn’t even think about that!

OP, I have the same thing. You don’t have to do anything to disperse tuition, unlike meal plan and housing money.
If you have funds coming in, they will automatically cover tuition expenses on 8/31…well, they probably already did. Your son should’ve received email confirming this.

I was also worried about this, so I stopped by Criser today, and that’s what they told me. Good luck!

My son just checked his Wells Fargo account and they deposited the Bright Futures into there since everything was already paid. Now I guess we have to take it out and send it to his student loan. What a pain.

Thanks, swindoll. Yes, his Florida Brights dispersed yesterday and he received an email a couple of days earlier stating that the balance isn’t due until 10/12. They sure like to cut things close, huh?

One of the problems was a glitch in the system at UF. UF had no information on our D. concerning Brigh Futures, I spoke to Talahassee originally and they had no problems supplying the information to UF. Evidently, UF had a glitch and quite a few kids where effected and they changed the tuition due to October from August. We later found out that although they straightened the system out, BF would be supplied late last week. First our Stafford loan kicked in and the balance went to Wells Fargo, and than a week later Bright Futures kicked in and again directly to Wells Fargo.
Unfortunately, information is non existent in ISIS, and hate to bother financial counselors since they are so busy with the students and parents prior to school and the first few weeks.
