Where’s our email?? Congrats to those who received theirs!
The “PREDICTED STATE SCH” (=FIS) and “PREDICTED NATIONAL MERIT SCH” is now showing in our ISIS page.
Congrats! What day did you choose UF #1? My son’s hasn’t updated yet. I just checked. He chose UF on NMSC website on April 12.
We did ours around April 5th. NMSC sent our new “rosters” April 10th. They said they would do it again on May 1st I think. NMSC actually answers the phone and gives useful information so you can call and they will confirm when the new roster will be sent out. It took UF a few weeks after receiving the roster before it showed up in ISIS. UF admissions was a bit tougher to get through to. You have to leave a message and they will call back, but they confirmed my daughter was on the April 10th roster.
Thanks! Must feel so good to see it finally documented. Happy for your family
Krista Scott just informed me that she has received updates from NMSC and will update ISIS by end of this week
Did she has that the updates were from today? We just updated ours on April 30. My D took a long time to decide!
She said that she received them at the end of last week, which could or could not include April 30th I guess. Happy to see that your D decided on UF, too! I know that she had several terrific options. Congrats on the big decision being finalized.
It was so incredibly hard for her but after a really excellent visit and the fact that Georgia Tech had their tuition raised another 9% , UF just seemed like the better overall choice for undergrad. She also accepted UF Honors and just updated her building preference to Hume. She still needs to do the Roomsync thing but she is in the middle of multiple AP exams!
Has anyone else’s child gotten any scholarships from local organizations? How do you think that will play out with the FIS? As far as I know, we have to report any scholarships to UF, yet total aid cannot exceed cost of attendance. So I assume the FIS figure will be adjusted to reflect any other scholarships?
I called the office of student financial aid (who manages the FIS) and they told me they only subtract Bright Futures and National Merit. I’m not sure where any other local-type scholarships will fit in. Anyone else in this situation?
Yes, we are as well. No that should NOT factor into it because scholarships based on MERIT are not considered NEED based aid. Now the actual scholarship may specify how it may be used. For instance my daughter did not even bother applying to one because it specifically stated it could not be awarded to someone who already had a full ride. The financial aid department follows the directions that the scholarship group specifies. If it states it can be used for any educational costs, then it will be- not just tuition and fees which are fixed. The FIS is a merit based state scholarship and no where in the language of the statute does it specify that the amount will be reduced based on other sources of income. It is not need based. They cannot penalize your student because you chose to 1) save for college with FL pre-paid or 2) your child chose to have great grades and work hard and get merit based scholarships.
I spoke to the ever-reliable and knowledgeable Mr. Mauney.
And he said, the way FIS works is, it is a flat amount based on COA at UF unlike Bright Futures which is based on the number of credit hours and so the state will send a check on behalf of the student every fall/spring term. This check will will be the following amount:
the COA to UF for that term
minus bright futures for that term for the student
minus the $250 UF per term award for national merit students.
Bright futures will take care of its part and UF the National Merit award.
I see tuition on COA page on the UF website is given as $6,310 - I assume this is a flat rate for students who are taking at least a minimum of 12 credit hours and up to a maximum of 18 credit hours.
http://www.sfa.ufl.edu/basics/cost-of-attendance/
And UF will return the FIS portion to students after collecting for tuition, fees, housing, books/supplies/computer etc.
@Mobie101 -
Mr. Mauney did say that if there are external scholarships, you should first try to get it sent for summer, if possible. Otherwise you will get a check at the end of the semester the award is sent or it will be posted to the student’s account (if the student has created one linked to UF Financial aid).
He added that students who have external scholarships exceeding COA just receive them at the end of the semester! Nice, that!
I spoke with Mr. Mauney to ask him about study abroad and FIS also.
And he said the FIS can be used for study abroad in fall and spring but not summer since FIS is only offered during fall and spring. However, he said any other scholarships (outside ones or other UF scholarships besides the national merit UF award or the state bright futures award) the student receives could be saved for summer. Prepaid can be used for summer also.
And since UF returns all left-over award/scholarship money after tuition, fees, books, housing back into the student’s account, this can be used for summer also.
My daughter is very interested in study abroad and now that it is doable I would appreciate it very much if you could suggest locations for her - she is a pre-law track Psych major and International studies minor. She has 50 plus AP (a dozen APs) and dual enrollment (4 courses) credits so she can graduate with all her courses at UF in 3 years plus do 1 year of study abroad. She says she wants to do unique courses not available in Gainesville on her study abroad year. A language she knows besides English is Spanish (AP Spanish Language level) and would like to learn more Spanish language/culture through immersion. She could do a semester/year of research/international internship too if that’s allowed. Any advice? How good are the UF exchange programs to Spanish speaking countries (Central America, South America, Spain, Mexico) or the English speaking ones or where courses/research are in English (Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore)?Anyone have any experience with study abroad through UF?
Also there is a 9 hour summer residency requirement for UF. I believe one way to waive it is a summer study abroad. Is there any other way to bypass this requirement?
She is planning the first 2 years at UF followed by a summer and 2 semesters/1 year abroad and then the last year at UF. Possible?
I appreciate all the info I have learned from CC and hope you can advise again. Thank you so much.
Just to let you know- she can only transfer a max of 45 credits from AP/AICE/IB/CLEP. Dual enrollment is counted as college credit.
“Students who enter a state university in Florida with fewer than 60 credits must earn at least nine credits before graduation during summer terms at State University System (SUS) institutions. However, students who earn six credits through UF-sponsored, UF exchange or approved SUS study-abroad programs during one or two summer terms completely satisfy the summer-term enrollment requirement. In addition, credits earned through any of the study-abroad programs approved by UF during a summer term count toward satisfaction of the summer-term enrollment requirement. Students who bring 60 or more transfer credits to UF, regardless of institution, will be exempt from completing the summer requirement at UF.” Does this help?
“The summer enrollment requirement may be waived for students who have completed a substantial internship or comparable professional development training during one or more summers in which they are enrolled at UF.”
Play around with the Study Abroad Program Search tool:
https://www.ufic.ufl.edu/SAS/ProgramSearch.html
Some of the most interesting programs are the “UF In XXX”, like the UF in Madrid. Also try to use the advance search tool. Sooo many options…
I believe Preview also has a study abroad breakout session.
thankyou saismom.
We did see the 45 credit limit - she has 42-44 credits probaby and 12 credits from UCF.
thanks for the detailed info on summer study abroad for waiving summer residency.
@mobie101 My son is going to FSU. He doesn’t have an “external” scholarship, but is getting $2400 from FSU and $500 from NMF. His financial statement shows those scholarships (and Bright Futures) being applied to the COA BEFORE the FIS. Wonder if we should question this? Since it’s all state money they probably consider it all as coming from the same bucket.
He’s also interested in study abroad. He’s graduating HS with an AA so all 60 credits will transfer. I think he really appreciates the position he will be in, with minimal financial or time pressure. When I was in school, I was always conscious that the meter was running.
Was hoping for ISIS update today :(.
Thank you @Gator88NE - will tell D to check ou the study abroad session at Preview.
Good to know that summer Research/Internships are also ways to waive the summer residency. Thanks!
