It is up on ISIS! Says it will be in his account in 3 days. So happy
Aw, man, my sonās awards havenāt disbursed. FIS and Bright Futures have moved from āpredictedā to āawardedā, though, so I guess it is just a matter of time? Do they do it alphabetically? We are right in the middle of the alphabet. Also, FL prepaid shows as disbursed, but only approximately $1600. Shouldnāt it be more for 14 credits? I
Wait! Scratch my previous post! I have been looking only on the ISIS page for āawards and disbursementsā, which still shows nothing but FL prepaid as disbursed. When I dug deeper, on "My Campus Finances, I see now where FIS and Bright Futures show as disbursed. I also see a line for āfinancial aid refundā, which I assume is the extra money after the housing, dining, and book deferments. Thatās the amount we will see direct-deposited, correct?
P.S. Is there a way to edit posts after you log out and log back in? I canāt find it.
@Mobie101 Our FL Prepaid program also paid out a little more than $1,600 for 14 credits. See posing #107 for a breakdown of the cost.
Direct deposit confirmed. Almost exactly a year after we first heard of PSAT scores and semi-finalist status. Long haul but thank you everyone especially Max Mauney and FIS :D/ I know our kids are going to do great things.
@Gator88NE, thanks so much. I missed those figures in your previous post. I didnāt really think about the fees as being such a huge part of ātuition and feesā, so I was expecting Prepaid to pay out more. Iām quite shocked by how much of the cost is āfeesā! Thanks for breaking it down! @saismom, thank you, too, for explaining everything and also breaking it down. I promise that in real life I am way more intelligent than my posts on this thread make me seem!!! :))
@Cshecmia, same here, direct deposit is in the account! I canāt believe it!! @saismom, has your direct deposit come through?
Iām so glad I had absolutely no idea about FIS when my son was taking the PSAT in 11th grade. I canāt imagine the stress he would have felt if he had known!! Plus we probably would have sent him to some sort of test prep if we had known what was at stake! Ignorance was definitely bliss in this scenario.
Everything is in except for one private scholarship that is supposed to be mailed to the house. Glad you are all seeing your disbursements/deposits as well.
S is a freshman at Miami. We are still waiting on Bright Futures and FIS. UF students have already received the FIS, is that correct? We are going to wait patiently as Miami did not defer any tuition while waiting for the FIS unlike other schools. He had to take out loans to cover the difference until FIS posts and then those loans will be cancelled.
Does anyone know what the FIS should total if youāre a student at Miami? Iām guessing it should be the total COA at FSU (I believe they have the highest COA of the public universities in FL) less Bright Futures and NM. Is that correct? Miami posted FIS this morning in the amount of $9,075 but it says yearly total. I hope this is just the semester total but if anyone can post the amount you received, that would be great. Thanks for any help you can provide.
@canes19 Donāt worry about it, that has to be the semester total as all state/federal funding is done on a per semester basis, BF, Pell, loans, pre-paidā¦Why would the state give you funds for Spring, when they have no guarantee that you will even enroll?
I think earlier in the thread, some folks posted what it paid out (for the year)ā¦its COA (at UF $20,590) - BF-other scholarships/grants
FSU COA is $21,208.00. Take out BF (which is based on the number of credit hours you take, but lets say $3K), and it would be around $9K a semester.
Gator88NE
Thsnk you. Miami had it listed under yearly total so thatās why I was concerned. I will see how everything reconciles on Thursday. He is taking 15 credit hours and his BF is 3,090 and NM is 2,000. Iām not sure if they took out both yet from the total FIS. This has been a long process but it sounds like the state is paying much earlier than last year so thatās a good thing.
Several people have mentioned direct deposits. Can someone give me an idea of how much you āgot back?ā We had to pay several fees and a small amount toward tuition at Miami and I thought S would get that back since his scholarships totaled COA. You can message me if you donāt want to post the amount on this thread. Thsnk you.
Hereās how things played out with FIS at Miami-the FIS posted and what it did was decreased sonās need based aid. It did not get added onto what was already offered. We thought it would because FIS and what was offered would have added up to COA. Bottom line, we are paying for his books, computer, personal expenses and about $2500 in tuition each year. It doesnāt really make sense to me but thatās how things turned out. Iām still pretty happy that heās at Miami and heās a Foote Fellow but the FIS seems to work out so much better at the public colleges than at Miami. I thought merit based aid trumped need based aid in this case but it did not.
@canes19, that stinks that the financial aid was adjusted like that, and that Miami didnāt tell you how it works until your son was already enrolled! Iād be pretty upset to get a surprise like that. I wonder if you can have some of the need-based aid reinstated if you call the financial aid office.
As for the direct deposits being discussed in this thread, the amount is basically for the expenses covered by FIS but not directly taken by the school. At UF, we were allowed to defer our housing, tuition, meal plan and books payments until the scholarship money was disbursed. Once FIS disbursed, UF took the money we owed for those things, and the rest was ārefundedā to the student via direct deposit to a bank account. The amount refunded was for the other expenses covered by FIS, such as computer, travel expenses, clothing allowance, personal expenses, etc. I believe part of the refund was also for the tuition covered by FL Prepaid. Iām assuming this same process will occur at the beginning of 2nd semester, also.
We thought S would get money back like the UF students but no such luck. We thought all those extra things like computer, personal expenses, etc would result in him getting money back. How can UF āignoreā the EFC and Miami cannot? The weird thing is that we arenāt paying our full EFC. Miami told us that they could not offer him total aid of more than 57,000 from all sources (COA less EFC.) It doesnāt sound like UF did things the same way.
The EFC has nothing to do with FIS. FIS is state a scholarship -it is not a federal or state grant or financial aid. The private school is awarding your S funds based on academics( scholarships) and also need( based on your EFC) . The FIS increases your ability to pay and therefore decreases your need. UF does not ignore the EFC but it simply does not come into play for people who are not receiving federal or state financial grants or aid.
Iām a little confused, did UF rejoin NMSC ālast-minuteā for last yearās NM finalists? My friend, who graduated high school last year, expressed a desire to go to UF and she was a NM finalist but ended up putting UCF as her first-choice school early in the spring. She is there now; she received a college-sponsored award. Why didnāt she put UF? She could have gotten FIS and gone there, which I know she would have preferred. Was UF not an option until it was too late for her to change her mind?
Maybe she was ill informed? And yes, UF just came back to the NM group as of last year but the $$ were retroactive and applied for the high school class of 2014 so those kids received funding anyhow! Also your friend may not have been accepted into UF. We know national merit kids who did not make it into UF but were accepted into Cornell!
The joy and wonder that is UFās holistic admissionsā¦ @-)
@Anglograce, it was very confusing last year and many of us did not know that UF had come back into NM until pretty late in the game. I can see how it would have easily been missed. If you read through this entire thread, you will see what a roller coaster it was trying to figure out how the FIS works! Hopefully your friend is happy at UCF. It is a great school, and the individual attention that UCF gives NM scholars is really nice. Luke VanBlaricom does a fantastic job with the NM program there.
