D (18 yrs old) accepted at both, interested in communications/management and is outgoing, active and likes sports, especially volleyball. Financial aid packages from both but Flagler definitely better deal for our $ contribution - by almost $5k/year. Would welcome any insight on the differences between the two schools including the atmosphere and activities as well as the academics.

Hi, & congrats to her! This fall I will be a rising junior at Flagler. Flagler has a great fiscal policy & I have received more financial aid every year! Flagler is incredibly unique because of our location in downtown St Augustine. There’s always festivals and events going on through both the college and the town and Daytona Beach & Jax are reasonable distances in you’re into more of a fast paced scene. Tourists provide students with ample job opportunities and the town is doable with out a vehicle, however most students have a bike. The at atmosphere is laid back with a definite community feel. The intramurals are very popular and we have a beach volleyball court right on campus! Let my know if you’ve got any specific questions!

Thank you for your reply, Ceilidh8. What is your major? What are the communications department equipment/professors like?

Sure. I am a psychology major & art history minor. The communication dept. is one of our largest. I believe there are, at least, a journalism, broadcasting, & PR tracks offered. We have radio station on campus and an online newspaper called The Gargoyle. Many student chose to pair a com major with a minor to further define their career plans. Unfortunately, I don’t know too much about the communication dept’s specific professors or equipment aside from what I’ve noted. As a school, however, the professors are overwhelmingly agreeable, helpful, & knowledgable. Most have terminal degrees and class sizes average at 21, though my freshman honor’s English course consisted of a great group of only 11 students. The school has ample computers, both Mac & PC, equipped with up-to-date technology, as well as cameras, and several laboratories. Hope that helped a bit.

dangbz, what did he decide? Did you visit Flagler, and if so what did you think of the Communications department? Flagler is on my d’s short list, and she’s interviewing in December. She’s interested in the technical side of communications (editing, producing) and will have 24 dual enrollment hours in comm/media production. Have looked some at Florida Southern, but it seems like the major is no different from the dual enrollment classes she’s already taken! High Point (NC), Goucher (MD), Loyola Maryland, and Susquehanna ¶ are also high on the list, with Gonzaga (WA) a reach. We live in Virginia.
