Hi, I was recently accepted into the fall as a freshman. I put exploratory as my major. I intend on majoring in computer science. I read online that the major is limited access and that you have to apply. My question is how difficult is it to get in? Thanks for your time.
If you’re a freshmen you can change your major easily
I know, but I am asking if the computer science major is hard to get into, or are you basically guaranteed admission if you meet the requirements?
Limited access means that there are typically more applicants than available seats. As a result, meeting the requirements is not a guarantee of acceptance into the CS program.
The likelihood of acceptance will depend on how well you stack up against other applicants, just like general college admissions. I’m not sure if you can even declare CS as a major until you have completed the prereqs first, like Discrete Math.
I was exploratory too for the first few weeks and then declared comp sci. Limited access just means that you’ll be considered pre-CS until you’re a junior, provided you’re making good grades in your pre-reqs.
“The Computer Science major is limited access. The minimum GPA for acceptance is 2.65 and students in the program must maintain a 2.5 GPA. A student who has accumulated more than 5 grades below a C- (including grades of U) in Mathematics, Statistics, natural science or computer science courses taken for college credit at FSU or elsewhere, whether reated or not, will not be permitted to continue as a major in the department.”
Technically, for all majors until you’re accepted as an upper division student, you are considered pre-(whatever the major is).
For limited access majors, as an FSU student, you have to also meet certain requirements for the major in order to be accepted into the major. Usually it’s GPA, certain pre-reqs, and the like. Usually, meeting the requirements will be sufficient in getting in to the major, but there is a small chance you won’t be accepted. I wouldn’t sweat it too much if you meet the requirements and your GPA is well over the minimum.
