Florida State or U of Florida or Clemson

hi everyone. i moved to the south east because the weather in iowa is too cold for me, im wondering between these schools, FSU UF and Clemson. i study computer science. which one should i choose, what are the pros and cons. i want a college with fresh atmosphere, green space, friendly students, good at CS, social activities, new buildings .. my friend in Iowa suggest me FSU as a party school. i sometimes party but not drink or smoke =]] so can i live well at those school, im an vietnamese student. i was accepted to texas a&m and penn state but i dont like there. i have no problems im making friends with white at Iowa so can i go to party in florida: )) tks a lot

UF is much more of a fanatical party school. But I’m a little biased, I must admit. My brother is a comp sci major at fsu. I don’t know exactly how the program stacks up, but I’ve always believed there is not much separating the Florida public schools in terms of undergraduate academics, despite the many students at UF that refer to it as “the Harvard of the south” (can I vomit now pls). But from what I’ve understood from my brothers experiences is that, yes, there are parties at fsu, but their are tons of niche communities, so no one really feels like an outcast. And the campus is really nice. I just love that giant oak tree and mossy vegetation. It’s so peaceful

Are you paying out of state tuition for these schools ? I would go with FSU because its sooooo much cheaper compared to the other two. FSU is also located in Tallahassee which is a bigger city than Clemson and Gainesville. Urban colleges are not dominated by heavy drinking culture.

UF is also ridiculously hard to get in for out of state people.

ill pay outstate tuition both two schools in florida charge international around $39k-$41k. i’ve never been to florida but i heard people said students from UF are kind of bossy in comparison with FSU but have nicer campus with better dorms and facilities :)

All three schools are fine, UF and Clemson have higher rated engineering schools, while FSU has the lowest OOS tuition ($21K vs. $27-29K). Clemson may have the best OOS merit aid, UF will have the worse.

FSU offers mostly software based CS programs, most UF grads are Comp Eng (more hardware), while Clemson has about an equal amount(CS majors and Comp Eng majors). If you want to work for Intel, think UF and Clemson (as a Comp Eng).

All three schools are know as “party” schools, all have very active students, and all three have pretty campuses.

You should also look into Auburn and Alabama, if you’re thinking FSU and Clemson. Alabama gives the best OOS merit aid (out of all of these schools), and Auburn’s engineering is around the same ballpark as Clemson.

On comparing UF to FSU…kids at both schools are about the same (they all went to high school together…). Both campuses have 32K+ undergrads, however, UF has many more grad students(about 8K to 18K). FSU is more OOS friendly, 8% are OOS, while UF is only 3%.

Good Luck!

tks gator88 i’m learning about CS as a developers in software so i definitely cant work for intel, maybe Google or somthing else, so which one do u think is better for me ? i checked alabama, great aid for OOS ,beautiful campus but it’s ranked not as high as FSU or clemson in CS according to Forbes and US news, i love pennstate campus because it’s isolated from the city, how about FSU or UF, i really dont like normal people walking around the campus, it makes me feel unsafe.

I can’t speak for FSU, but UF’s has one large continuous campus, in the center of town. Very few “normal” folks, walk thru the campus (with the exception of sporting events). It does feel like a world apart.

FSU is located in Tallahassee, the capital city of the state of Florida. UF is located in Gainesville, a typical college town where everything is pretty UF-centric. Of the 3 schools you mention, Clemson is the most isolated from any city since it’s about 30-45 minutes from the nearest town with an airport.

I’m a civil engineering student at Clemson. The weather here is fantastic. We have all 4 seasons but short winters and extended springs/summers. It is really warm in the summer. We get a little snow in January/February since we’re near the mountains but it almost never sticks. I think one of the advantages that Clemson has over Florida State and Florida is it’s size. Compared to FSU and UF, Clemson is a medium-sized school with only 15,000 undergraduates. (FSU/UF have 30,000 undergraduates) Class sizes are much smaller - largest class I have had is 150 people and most are 30-40 people. There are about 357 students in CS at Clemson. Our career services office was recently ranked 11th by the Princeton Review and nearly all of my friends who have graduated have found jobs or have moved on to graduate school. 84% of our students have done some sort of internship/co-op and 46% have done some sort of undergraduate research. We consistently rank in the top 5 as having the happiest students, we were recently ranked the 4th friendliest school by Huffington Post and 91% of students say they would start over at Clemson if they had to choose again. To top it off, we’re #5 in the US News rankings when it comes to % of alumni who give back to their school which shows how much Clemson students value their experience.

If you come take a tour of Clemson (which I highly recommend), you’ll find that our campus is gorgeous and there’s a lot of green space on campus (Bowman Field being the center of that) - students are friendly. There are 400+ student organizations on campus so there is plenty to do and get involved in and we’re constantly updating buildings/building new ones. Another great thing about Clemson is that we do a great job of balancing work/play. People will be serious about their academics Monday-Friday and then blow off steam and do something fun Saturday/Sunday. I’m actually proud that we haven’t been on the Princeton Review’s party schools list recently (think the last time we were on there was 2004) because it shows that we take our academics seriously and that we aren’t just partying our way through college. There are only 2% Asians on campus being in South Carolina but I’m Chinese and it hasn’t been a problem for me and I don’t think it will be for you either.

So that’s my pitch for why you should go to Clemson over Florida/Florida State. Again, if you haven’t taken a tour of Clemson yet I would highly recommend it. Let me know if you have any questions about Clemson!

Florida State’s campus is much prettier and more close knit than UF’s. I visited both and I’ve been a gator fan my whole life but after visiting FSU I like it wayyyy more. They’re both college towns, Gainesville and FSU. The UF campus is HUGE though so if you want a smaller more compact campus pick FSU.

To add on to my last post:
Clemson isn’t exactly cheap but we’re consistently ranked by SmartMoney as having a great return on investment and Princeton Review says we’re one of the best value public colleges in the country. Yes, Clemson is sort of in the middle of nowhere but we still find things to do and have fun. We wouldn’t have the happiest students or score a 97/99 on Princeton Review for quality of life if we were just sitting in our rooms twiddling our thumbs. Like I said, there are 400+ student organizations at campus from intramural/club sports to academic organizations to greek life. We’re also near the mountains and on a lake so there are a bunch of outdoor recreation opportunities. Downtown is small with a few bars but still a lot of fun. Of course sporting events especially football games are awesome. People will tailgate for them starting at 7 AM all over campus.

thanks Pierre i can see you are very happy at Clemson University. I will take a trip . how about student’s friendliness. i heard that there are as many cute girl in Clemson as in FSU but i’m a little worry about their "conservative ". how do u think about that i’m afraid i cant get belong bc they don’t like to hang out with Asian American boys. If i don’t get involved in frats, will i be able to take part in outdoor activites, be invited to party, it’s not because i hate frat, i think it could be time consuming in normal week days

We were recently included on Huffington Post’s list of friendliest colleges: [The FRIENDLIEST Colleges](<a href=“The FRIENDLIEST Colleges | HuffPost College”>The FRIENDLIEST Colleges | HuffPost College)
People are seriously really nice around there, random people will talk to you - you can give the staff hugs if you want and if you need help with anything, just let someone know!

I’m not going to compare Clemson girls with FSU girls since I don’t go there but there are a bunch of good looking Clemson girls lol. As for “conservative”-ness, Clemson is definitely a more conservative school but as long as you don’t have too many political conversations, it won’t be a problem. People won’t shove their beliefs in your face if you don’t do the same to them or bring something up. Like I said, I’m Chinese and I have a bunch of friends on campus and I get along well with anything (95% of them aren’t Asian lol because we’re such a small minority). Also, only about 25% of the campus is involved in Greek Life so there is definitely a social life for the 75% of people on campus who don’t go Greek.

Chinese, my neighbor  . i definitely will take a trip there . do u take part in any frat? do u go to party there :))
oh and by the way, i u go to party without drinking beer or acohol LOL I dunt like beer

Keep in mind, Clemson is located in Clemson which is a very small rural town. Of course, Pierre knows more than me because he goes there, but still I can tell you this: Clemson is heavily dominated by drinking culture like any other rural college. Think twice before choosing Clemson.

I know plenty of Clemson graduates who have never touched alcohol – and every single one is absolutely crazy about Clemson. They go to all the football games, decorate their homes/rooms with Clemson everything, and talk about Clemson all the time. They had a wonderful experience there and are very loyal to their school. If the drinking culture were all that bad, they wouldn’t have loved their college years so much. Indeed, there is a very strong religious presence on campus – and many of the participants in those groups don’t drink at all.

I agree with Marsian, I just turned 21 last December and other than a few parties freshman year, I have for the most part chosen not to drink in college and I have had a fantastic Clemson experience. The party scene is there if you want it and while there will obviously always be pressure from people to drink, they’re still fun to attend if you don’t. If people know that you don’t drink from the get-go and you can get past the initial peer pressure, people will back off a bit and you’ll find people you can hang out with that actually respect what you believe about drinking (which is more important in the long run in terms of friendship). I know Penn State is a big party school in a rural area but Clemson is definitely nothing as wild as Penn State contrary to what XtremePower would like you to believe.

No, I am not in a fraternity. If you want to join, go for it - I know Asians who have joined a fraternity in Clemson and have loved their experience so don’t let that deter you from joining one if that’s what you would want to do.
