Florida State Scholarship Opportunities

What are my chances of receiving some sort of scholarship or financial aid from Florida State University? I have recently been accepted there.

GPA: 3.6
ACT: 33
SAT: 2020
AP/Honors Courses
4 Year Varsity Athlete

I recently applied to the honors program by petition and am also an out of state student. Am I eligible for any scholarships by the school? Is it too late for any scholarships? I'm not sure that I will be able to afford the out of state tuition without help. Would a student loan be a good idea?

Your scores are very high for FSU. If you were an in state student your tuition and fees would be 100% paid for, I believe, and you would be automatically invited to the honors program. I have been told they don’t help much with room & board, but don’t know that for a fact. I really don’t know too many public schools that go above and beyond for out of state students in terms of school-funded scholarships.

What is the appeal with FSU?

Well I was waitlisted at Virginia Tech and JMU and rejected from UVA (most likely due to my low GPA). I have always just liked the school and the campus, and it’s the only school that I have been accepted too. I am yet to hear back from Clemson but am most likely going to FSU. I am going on a visit next week; would I be able to talk with the Financial Aid people and maybe look into some sort of help?

I would definitely recommend a phone call to them to start working on the financial aid NOW and also scheduling an appt when you visit. FSU sent out a lot of their aid information MONTHS ago. Many students knew their aid situation, scholarship situation and honors information probably in their early February timeframe. You need to hurry, don’t take any more time.

Yeah that’s what I was worrying about. I wasn’t anticipating to actually go there to be honest. I thought that I would get into JMU, VT, and maybe UVA. Alright well thanks, I’ll work on contacting them now then.

My son’s safety school was Florida. He also didn’t plan on going there, but we did do all of the paperwork just in case and worked on his aid, honors, etc… Unfortunately, at his # 1 he is waitlisted.

You have very high scores for FSU, you may be able to leverage that because you are definitely the type of student on paper that they want.

Yeah I wish I had applied to UF also. And I am pretty confused on how the whole financial aid/scholarship process works but hopefully I’ll be able to figure it out and get something out of it. It’s just frustrating to work so hard and then have to consider community college as a real possibility now.

UCF is really generous with OOS but they always say apply early while they still have money. Hypothetically, they might give you instate tuition though. Then become in-state for tuition purposes and transfer? just a thought.

Really? I’ll definitely look into that thank you. Yeah one of my biggest problems was procrastinating on my applications. Really regretting it now.

Here are the scholarships offered. I assume there is less money because UCF gave me money while FSU gave me nothing, FSU had the earliest deadline, the first one was October 13th so that might also be a factor.

Email admissions about it. I had a drastic increase in my SAT score after I was admitted, and I asked if I qualified for a certain scholarship. I got “No; you get a better one!” in an email the following week.

Oh and is that your unweighted GPA? If it’s your FSU weighted GPA then they might not offer anything. =/

FSU weighs GPA more than SAT scores. The average enrolled GPA at FSU was 3.71 last cycle. You’d likely be accepted, but scholarships and Honors is not at all certain.

I don’t know how to find my FSU calculated GPA. And thanks for all the suggestions and information. I’m going to try and apply to UCF today and I’ll e-mail admissions and ask about it at FSU. And parent2noles I’ve already been accepted.
