Florida State, University of Central Florida, University South Florida any applicants

Zevesal - Congratulations on getting into UCF. Everyone I know that goes there, loves it. Since they are not using the SAT writing score for admissions yet, I was wondering if you would mind sharing your combined math and reading SAT score?

Seiclan, sure. But are you positive they don't use the writing section? Heres what my UCF Admissions page looks like:

Description Test Date Description Test Score
Scholastic Aptitude Test I 06/01/2006 Highest Math Score 550.00
Scholastic Aptitude Test I 10/01/2006 Total 1130.00
Scholastic Aptitude Test I 10/01/2006 Highest Verbal Score 580.00
Scholastic Aptitude Test I 10/01/2006 UCF High Writing Value 630.00

If its hard to see though, I had a 550 on math and a 580 on verbal

From the UCF website: "UCF will use the highest official reported score. SAT scores are compiled using the highest verbal and math sub scores from each test taken. ACT scores are based on the highest reported composite score."

It dosen't say anything about using the writing section. My hs daughter's college advisor said that as of now, they still are NOT using it in the admissions process (but some schools are using it for Freshman year placement).

BTW, your total SAT score is 1760. Congrats!

Another point that you brought up. We didn't know that UCF doesn't combine ACT's section scores where most of the other schools do such as FSU. It seems a bit strange, if your willing to combine scores on one test to arrive at the highest aggregate why wouldn't you on another?

Zevesal -I will be very interested to learn if you get into U of Miami. That is going to be my daughter's reach school (and she has a 3.66 GPA/1120 SAT). Incidently, I am an alum of BU...wonderful place to go to college!!!

seiclan, good luck to your daughter. Miami is my absolute dream school. I'd love nothing more then to go there. Thats why I applied to so many schools in Florida, so if I dont get in and decide to transfer, I would make an easy transition. For what its worth, I was accepted to UCF, Barry University (with merit aid), Florida Atlantic University, and Florida International University.

I think I have a good shot at BU. My sister is currently a senior and since I applied to the CGS I should be right around their acceptance curve.

I'll definitely let you know about Miami though.

Ray, UCF's policy mirrors that at FSU and UF. The highest combination from different tests is accepted. It is inflated, to a certain degree, at all.

One UF admissions officer told us in our tour group he didn't care if kids took the SAT or ACT 12 times to get the best combination. It's almost as if they just want the prestige of high scores, without really getting them.

With the MCAT, for example, most med schools think that if you took it more than twice you should just pick another career goal...your chances of admission are nil, as obviously you're not qualified.

I think this is why FSU has always held academic performance in rigorous classes higher in regard than such tests as the SAT or ACT (excepting the MCAT to FSU Med).

So we made the journey here so far as my D has gotten her acceptances at Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic, and now South Florida. I wonder if anyone would care to speculate on what the remaining chances are at UCF and FSU?

I live in gainesville florida and applied regular decision to UF only to be deferred to rd II. In the mean time i have been accepted to 3 schools ranked higher then UF including an IVY league school. UF is being very very selective this year.

Thats the thing, they fall into brackets with UCF AND FSU being in the same bracket, so if she gets into one expect the other one to come right after, and congrats for her.

UF can afford to be selective, they are getting tons of applications from very good students and they have limited space. They do commend your excellent record of academic achievement though and cite the limited space when they reject you. We do hope that you will come back for a upper division transfer.

Fsu-uf thanks, I suspected in a way that they are joined at the hip.

While the acceptance rates are lower at FSU and UCF it's not obvious from the data what makes any of these three schools much different. In the borderline GPA areas from 3.0 to 3.25 UCF had the highest percentage of their total population with 19% Vrs FSU with 14% and USF with 13%, up one bracket from 3.25 to 3.5 UCF and FSU almost tie at 15% and USF has 18%.

I shifted over to test grades even though we have been told by both remaining schools that grades are not an issue, In ACT's of 24-30 USF and UCF are almost tied again at 46-47%, FSU has 58%.

Hard to seperate the three schools, sounds like a coin flip. I guess probably 50/50 chance.

wow is that the same person you earlier said that FSU is for UF rejects? and you were deferred? umm

Zebes - Thank you for the breakfast place rec...I will def go there!

Ray 111 - I'm sure your D will get accepted to UCF soon. My D applied back in Oct. because she had friends happy there and they had rolling admissions. It was a great relief to get that nice acceptance package back in November! Although she's not totally ready to rule out UCF, it is more and more unlikely she will go there...she realizes she wants a smaller school. I think many FL kids got early acceptances there, but as decision time draws closer, they are honing in on where they really want to go. That should result in more spots opening up at UCF.

I also didn't know that she applied to USF and found an acceptance letter with scholarship from them this week.

Tomorrow we leave for NCF!!!

2forCollege have a great trip to New College, If your D is looking for a smaller school from what I've heard it's a great one.

Just checked the UCF site another day passes with no change in status.

I still believe FSU is for UF rejects. Note i said i was deffered not rejected. I still have hope.

Sigh.

UCF thinks my first name is Sal and last name is Zeve.

And for anyone that has been waiting for a while for a status change, especially when UCF has received all documents, listen to this story.

UCF had my transcript and SAT scores for over a month. No change. I was worried.

I called and they said just keep waiting. Finally, after two months I called again and they told me there was a problem with my transcript.

Apparently they couldn't tell that LIVENVI meant Living Environment. They thought I didnt have enough science credits.

About an hour after that phone call I was accepted.

I did call last week, not sure why they were sitting on her application, but she promised a decision soon. No E mail messages are sent, just keep checking the site as the committee meets continuously. Just checked, same message.

We aren't worried we are just tired, decide either way and get on with it.

Good luck but you should really stop judging people on what school they choose to go to.
