Florida State University

who else applied to this school? has anyone gotten accepted? i got accepted last week and have decided this is where i am going.. i just want to see if anyone will be joining me in the fall of 05!

My D is currently a freshman musical theatre major at FSU. We live right across the river from you. If you have any questions, let me know.

that's great... i was wondering how the campus looks, is it pretty? unfortunately, i won't be able to visit the school before i attend.

The FSU campus has many brick buildings in Spanish mission style. Even the football stadium is in this style. There are lots of live oak trees covered in Spanish moss and quite a few palm trees. You can see pictures of some of the buildings on the FSU website. I think the campus is pretty.

If you plan on attending, then you need to visit. Tallahassee is a nice town, with great music, art, athletics, and political opportunities. There's lots of pretty trees and residential areas which make up the FSU campus. I liked it a lot when I lived there. However, it's a big party school, and it is HOT!!!!!

i would love to visit the school before i attend but it's hard to convince my parents. i have tried to tell them the line "would you buy a car before test driving it?" but it just doesn't work, they just tell me that they went to a school not caring about how pretty it was and blah blah.. only caring about the education. yeah, i care about education or i wouldn't be going.. but it's where i'm going to spend the next four years of my life... i don't want to be miserable.. grr,, how should i convince them to go check out the school? it's 12 hours away from where we live.

What is your prospective major?? Maybe tell them that you want to talk with the dean of ___ college, or you want to see the dorms to decide where to live.

Or, save up some money yourself, fly over to Tallahassee through Air tran, delta, etc. and stay in a campus motel and go on a tour for a day. Or, you can drive or take AMTRAK.

thanks for the advice but my parents would never let me stay in a hotel room by myself.. i was wondering maybe they have a program where prospective students stay with current students for a weekend.

I recommend calling the visitors center. Here's a link to visit options:

Patientlywaiting: I went to FSU with my daughter who was auditioning for their musical theatre program. She wasn't accepted and went to another college, but we did like the FSU campus. I think if you want to go there that you would most probably like it. It's a big, traditional state university campus. Even though it is large, there is a good campus bus system.

I can tell you what we liked about it.

We thought that people were VERY friendly and polite at FSU. We were there during a scheduled visitors' weekend--I can't remember the name of the weekends but they have several during the year. Multiple students on campus asked us if we needed any help and everyone in all the offices and on the tours was very pleasant. They even had extra tour guides just roaming the campus that day in case anyone needed any help. The president of the college was on the steps of the administration building passing out warm homemade cookies.

They have a strong arts presence at FSU with a special season of performances. There is also a student circus troupe! We saw the students rehearsing.

We saw several dorm rooms which seemed nice, and there is good security at the dorm doors. There are separate dorms for music majors and honors students. The students we talked to in the dorms were uniformly polite and nice to us. They all complained about the food and said not many stay in the dorm after freshman year. If you do decide to go there, be sure to sign up for housing immediately (like RIGHT NOW) because there are not enough dorm rooms for all the freshman and some have to live off campus.

Bookiemom is right about housing at FSU; if you plan to attend in the fall, sign up for housing now. Dorm rooms owned by the university are in short supply. However, there are many privately owned dorms in Tallahassee. The prices are competitive with the university owned dorms. Meal plans are separate from housing, so some students live in private dorms but purchase university meal plans. I think the food at Real Food on Campus (RFOC) is very good. I have eaten there several times. My daughter has had no complaints about the food.

Dorm rooms at FSU come in different price tiers. The nicer dorms cost more. My daughter currently lives in one of the least expensive dorms. It is pretty drab. She and her roomate have tried to dress it up a bit. One nice little perk at FSU is that all dorms come equipped with small refrigerators. You can see floorplans and some pictures of the dorms at the FSU website.
