Florida State

Hi all, Im considering Fla State becuase I like the large school, school spriti, football game nights type of place. But, I also want to be a beach lifeguard. Is FSU too far from the coast to be able to work as a lifeguard?

You can work as a lifeguard at local pools if you like, but FSU would require a fair commute to local beaches. It would be about 35 to 40 miles to the nearest coast.

The FSU Reservation (the Rez) employs student lifeguards.

About the Rez - See:

Additionally, there's Wakulla Springs State Park. This is farther away and not affiliated with FSU.

If its just 35 to 40 miles away...then driving to a beach wouldnt be TOO bad. What is that about 40 minutes each way?

Why don't you look at UCSB? They have their own beach on campus, you basically walk out of your dorm and onto the beach.

what about UM, beach is about 5minutes away.

I wouldnt get into UM, or I would go. :( and parents wont let me go to cali. Looks like Im stuck with a 40 minute commute.

There are other schools too in the Carolina's, UNC-Wilmington is right on the coast, look around, don't limit yourself to one school, especially when it doesn't have what you want in a school.

Check out U of South Florida

Thanks guys for the replies. I dont want a commuter school though, USF is from what Ive heard. Im from TN, an dmy school in NY now everyone goes home on the weekends, it sucks. and everyone commutes (75%). Im considering U of Tampa too.

take a look at San Diego State

Here's another vote for UNC-Wilmington. I've been on that campus. It's lovely and it's a literally a hop, skip and a jump from the beach.

Might also want to look at Florida Atlantic and Florida International, they are right on the beach too and have D1 Football (teams are in the Sun Belt conference).

nope not fau or fiu, both are for the braindead and are about 90%commuter schools.

NewyorkYankee from Tennesee-- I never would have guessed that. D considered U Tampa- we visited the school and thought it had possibilities. It is NOT a commuter school. A good % of the kids come from the NE. Also do not think it was too close to the beach as you have to travel to Clearwater/St. Pete's area about 30 minutes away. Coincidentally- NY Yankees have their winter training camp in Tampa which we did visit during our trip to the campus. And a pretty famous Yankee graduated U Tampa (I do not remember which one) and visits the campus. They also say that some of the team uses the track at U Tampa- maybe they just want to look at the co-eds, but I did hear that the Yankees do frequent the campus. D decided to stay closer to home and will go to school in NY, but I think U Tampa is a school to consider. Maybe Fsu-uf can give you a florida students point of view of U Tampa. But- I do not think they have a football team.

Haha, UTAMPA just like NCF are basically unknown's in the state, the only reason why Iknow of UTampa is because they're baseball team heavily recruits at my school, I think they were the division 2 baseball champs but anyways UT doesn't have a rep, and not many know much about it.

I think U Tampa gets more kids from OOS than from Florida- it is not a state U. So a positive thing is that the kids do not go home on the week-end. I know of a NY kid who went to U. South Florida also in Tampa but transferred out after a semester. Also thought it was too much of a commuter school. We looked at alot of OOS public U's- and I gotta admit many seemed to be commuter campuses where lots of kids go home on the week-end. So tread carefully when checking out these schools as you may find yourself in the same predicament. Good luck.

yea I'm facing the same issues and the ones which aren't commuter seem impossible to get into, umich, unc, uf,etc.

Well, you said that you wanted a beach school that's not in California that has "large school" "football game night" type of atmosphere, and that isn't a commuter school, isn't too hard to get into, and you're not giving us much to work with. Miami sounds perfect for you (although not on the beach, about 5-10 minutes to the beach), and if you have above a 3.0 I don't see why you wouldn't get in there.

I am going to play matchmaker- A2Wolves- aren't you going to do Sports Management at Indiana?? Fsu-uf is looking for an OOS public that doesn't seem to be primarily a commuter school and not impossible to get into. Does Indiana fit the bill?? Maybe you 2 should talk. And A2 is right again- U of Miami is not a commuter school and near the beach. But it is a bit pricey.
