Florida State

The OP is looking for a school near a beach where he can be a lifeguard, that was his first criteria, and Indiana is nowhere near a beach (4 hours from Chicago, lol). So I don't think it's a fit, lol.

A2 --Fsu-uf was looking for OOS public- not too hard to get into. See posts #17 & 18. I wasn't matching you up with the OP but with FSU. What do you expect- I am a Jewish Mom- we always play matchmaker.

Ohhhhhhhhh, I was confused!!! I had a blonde moment, lol, even though i'm not blonde!

That's ok- We all have those moments. Some of us have it more than others. Anyway- I want to Thank you too A2. You have really given alot of good info on Sports Management Programs. As you may remember (unless you are having another blonde moment)- my d too is doing sports management. She really did not want to go too far from home and decided to do the program at SUNY Cortland. It actually does appear to be a pretty decent program and they do seem to have good internships. Anyway- good luck to all of you. I am not going to be posting too much anymore- I've been around for over 3 years as I went through these threads for both my d's-- It's been fun!!

Congrats on your D marny! As you know for SM, it's not about the rep of the school, it's about the program and it's connections. If SUNY Cortland gets the internship, then it's as good as any school, and that's all that matters.

Marny, thank you very much for your input! I appreciate it! The NewYorkYankee comes from me going to a year of school at Pace University in Manhattan. 30 minutes to drive isnt too bad to lifeguard. I guess its about the same distance as FSU is to the beach. Im sure I could lifeguard at a beach near Tampa, but does anyone know if the beaches closest to FSU hire guards?

ok, UMiami would be perfect, but I have a 3.0 and a 22 on the ACT. so I wouldnt get in.

Your test scores don't matter if you transfer with 30+ credits, just your college GPA. And if you have above a 3.0, you're going to get in.

Marny, can you describe some of the students you met while at UT?

I really couldn't get a good read on the school. We were only there for a short time and I don't think my d seriously considered going to school in Fla. As we were visiting grandma in Fla during February break, we made the trip to Tampa to see the school.
It's a relatively small school with enrollment under 5,000. The campus is a very short walk (maybe 3 blocks) to downtown Tampa. So if you are looking for a large campus with lots of activity - this may not be the place to be. The kids seemed pleasant and laid back- but as you are already dissatisfied with your present school, you certainly do not want to make the same mistake and be in an environment that doesn't suit you. So you really gotta visit and form your own opinion.
I think you really got to set your priorities. If you can compromise and work as a lifeguard at a pool instead of the beach, you can really consider alot more colleges- including all the big state U's that have lots of activity and football. If being at the beach is your top priority, you are going to greatly limit your schools for consideration. I also did check out website for UNC-Wilmington. You may want to check that out too, but it may also have a bit of a commuter feel. Old Dominion is near Virginia Beach and we did see that campus- but we also thought it was too much of a commuter campus so my d did not even apply there. Any schools in Ga or SC near the beach??- Maybe I'll do a google search- if I can think of anything I'll come back and post.

Do more research on these schools- but here's a start
Coastal Carolina near Myrtle Beach. Enrollment 7600 38% OOS. D's friends sister goes there and she is from Long Island.

Clemson U- not by a beach but seems to be close to Lake Hartwell (maybe they have a beach area by the lake and Clemson is big time sports-I think .

Eastern Carolina U in Greenville NC. I do not think it is on the coast- but may not be too far from a beach area- Good luck with your search.

In my part of Florida, lifeguards at the beach are full time year-round positions. Not many openings for seasonal or part-time lifeguards and beach positions require a bit of experience. We have quite a few guards that are 35-40ish and have been working the beach for 15-20 years. Now in Florida, pools and water theme parks hire alot of students. And lots of opportunities right on campus at many colleges and universities. We have visted Florida LAC's with D and everyone she asked told her they would first train her and put her to work if she were interesed.

Im going down to florida in the third week of this month. I'm going to visit: UF, FSU, UNF, UT, and UM. So wish me luck! If I don't like UT Im just going to go for a larger school and sadly forget the beach. Thanks for the replies Marny, but Im only considering Florida. I want a year round warm climate, the carolinas get kinda cold. (Like in TN where I live now.)

Sunny, where in fla are you?

Carolinas get cold? That's laughable.

Yes, they do. Jan and Feb highs in th 50's. I prefer Tampas weather.

just a warning miami might be to hot for you...95 degrees, 70%humidity, heat index 102 degrees/

Good luck with the trip. Let us know what you thought about the schools.

Good luck with everything! It's funny how your trying to get away from TN and into Florida. And I just did the opposite. I'm getting out of Florida to go to Tennesssee.

Florida weather is miserable. Yuck! Have fun though.

Where are you going? UT (U of TN not to be confused with U of Tampa) Can you give me some insight into which I'd rather do?

Florida State, I like the big school environment, with a lot of school spirit and involvement, not a commuter school, and great chances to make a lot of friends. BUT, not near a beach, and my friend in Orlando said Tallahassee was more like GA, than FLA. She said it gets cold there. Also, its not near a beach.

University of Tampa, near the beach, I would work as a lifeguard and could hang out there everyday. I love the beach. Great weather year round, but, at a school with little school spirit and small size.

I'm so confused and stressed, I dont know what to do.
