Has anybody else's child been felled by the flu? Our S moved out of his room when his roomie got sick but still ended up with a high fever, missed classes, a nurse visit and quarantine. No blood test for the type of virus, so now we are thinking he should still get both shots. Thoughts?

The school has a meal delivery system for sick students for which we are grateful.

D was feeling a little strange, but shook it off. She did get the first, general flu shot a week or so ago. The new flu shot isn’t available just yet. If he had the swine flu he will be immune without the shot. I think I’d encourage getting both shots once he’s well enough to consider it.

Sorry your boy is sick. I’m sure this isn’t the way he pictured his first month on campus…

So far, DD has been healthy. Fortunately, she and her roommate each have their own rooms this year so I am hoping that helps a little. I sent vitamins in my last care package - like that is going to make up for the sleep deprivation that is the norm for all Yalies!

MC2013 - oh, dear. I am embarrassed to tell you that DD still takes chewable kids vitamins :0. I get them at a health store and she takes a double dose since she is certainly no longer a kid! I figure it is better to send something she is more likely to take than something age appropriate that will remain in the bottle. I also regularly send fruit via Hales, although it gets shipped to the PO and so they have to check regularly their box regularly when it is scheduled to arrive.

worknprogress, I’m so glad you shared the chewables confession. The only vitamins that get taken at our house are the gummy ones, now available in adult dose, made by vitafusion, and available at Costco. I sent a bottle to my daughter in her recent health-themed care package.

flu shot update: my daughter got her shot through the athletic department-she’s an athlete. She said they are ramping up the vaccination effort and the buzz is that the shots will be available through the residential colleges, and students should have no problem getting their shot in the next week or so. If you are trying to stay in touch with what’s going on at Y, I sometimes find things before my daughter does by checking the Yale Station website. I don’t helicopter, but do give a heads up if I see something important. The flu shots might be announced here:

YDN reported that some H1N1 vaccines were sent to CT but only children aged 2 to 4 would receive them. My S got his regular flu shot yesterday at Yale Health Services - you can sign up online for a 30 minute window to reduce wait time. Just search YHS on the Yale website. He and his suitemates have not fallen ill yet (knock on wood) and they have been using the Airborne I sent out in the last package. Don’t know if it really works but it is loaded with vitamins and herbs.

riverrunner: I don’t like to call myself a helicopter either, but I enjoy reading the YDN and the Yale Station (get envious reading that bulletin board of events!)

Riverrunner - thnx for making me feeling less foolish. What does your DH say about the H1N1 vaccine? I have heard some concerns about the how the vaccine has been rushed and the potential side effects. It is hard to know how to balance the risks of the flu vs. the risks of the vaccine.

MC,
She got it at the Hall of Graduate studies. She said they came around to the RCs last year but aren’t this year. She says there should be a list with dates and places available, but thought there might not be more until the end of the month.

wisedad - hope all is going well with your son. I am sure this wasn’t easy being away from your son when he was ill. I won’t tell you all the things I would have been worried about - just in case you didn’t think of them!

Anyway, hope the course of illness was brief and mild.

Well, he’s still coughing some but back in class. Fever broke after 3-4 days. Hopefully he didn’t share the virus with any of your children!

I really appreciate all the well-wishing. I was so worried all along that he would get the flu far from home but it sounds like Yale has measures in place to limit the spread and monitor and aid the ill. Still, it is very hard to know your child is sick and you can’t care for him.

Thanks very much for the link to the regular flu shot clinic sign up – I’ve sent him the link and asked him to please get it. I understand the H1N1 vaccine is being shipped to states now and will encourage him to get that, too, if it is available. Without a blood test to say what he had, better safe than sorry. Too bad he hates needles so much.

We were at least encouraged by the school’s response to kids who got sick. It was disorienting enough to have all those national news stories about a poor grad student getting murdered in a secure building at a school we had just left him at. And that we had been so happy he would be attending.

Good to hear your son is bouncing back. I saw a thread on the parents cafe forum about care packages and I was thinking maybe we should all send some Lysol. A couple of weeks ago when several members of the Cornell band were sleeping in DD’s common room I have to admit I was cringing (since they had a pretty bad outbreak). I resisted the urge to tell my daughter to clean all the doorknobs after they left. DH warned me about sounding a little like Howard Hughes!

Just an update on the flu shot. A couple of weeks ago, there were signs everywhere and free flu shots were given in Commons on a walk in basis. All Yalies had the opportunity to get them then. There should be a another chance coming up soon for those who did not get it.

Well, I should have sent the Lysol. Just got a call from DD who has been quarantined because of swine flu. I feel so bad for her because she has been working so hard as an officer of her orchestra getting ready for family weekend. Looking back on it, she is pretty sure she was getting sick Monday, but had so much to do Mon/Tuesday she just kept thinking that is why she was so tired and achey.

I am also concerned that she has enough to drink in her room, fortunately her roommate is wonderful and will do some shopping for her.

I will keep you posted. Praying for a speedy return to health.
