Flunked GRE. Should I still apply?

Just got the GRE scores today: 370V 800Q 4.5AW T___T
Background:
International student from Hong Kong (HKUST if it matters) GGA 7.42/12
1 sem exchange in the US (Missouri University of Science and Technology) GPA 3.42/4
1 summer research in molecular biology
1 sem undergrad research in chem (in the US)
1 sem student helper in microbiology
1 year full-time RA in molecular biology
no pubs/ conferences (have been working on commercial stuff)
3 solid LoRs
have contacted a prof at Dartmouth (she said she is interested and will look over my application)
others schools on my list: U of Utah, UT Austin, Tufts, UGA

Do I still have a shot with this GRE verbal score?

Only the professor you want to work with can answer that question. You need to take the TOEFL so that the universities know about your English proficiency.

For example in Engineering if your TOEFL score is very good (assuming it >95) V GRE doesn’t matter. I can’t tell you for sure if it is the same for biology, but I definitely think so.
Good Luck!

Since you’re an international student, your GRE verbal doesn’t matter. You just have to pass the TOEFL above a certain minimum.

I can see why you struggled with the verbal section, considering you titled this thread “flunked” the GRE, when you scored perfect on the quant section.

Don’t be discouraged. Always give it a shot! The worst that can happen is they say no.

It is good that you are talking to professors individually about this.

I would say you have more than a decent shot at those schools. 370 in Verbal is pretty good for an international.
I am an international applicant from Turkey with similar stats (exchange in US, close GPA, research experience etc). I would say you should apply for 3-4 more highly ranked schools as well. Good luck!!

Thanks for all your comments! Actually I can communicate fluently in English, just that I didn’t memorize many vocabs before the test. (Btw I’m going for biomedical engineering.)

re gtugce: would u mind telling what’s your application results?

fififiona: I haven’t got any results yet! I just finished submitting my applications  Good luck!
