I was put in Fluor tower for housing. I was really excited at first, but now I'm nervous because of all of the horror stories I'm hearing about how it's hard to make friends. I'm pretty social and I don't want to be around people who just keep to themselves. Anyone who stayed in fluor tower have any advice or had a good experience? Anyone else dorming in fluor tower have this same concern?

My son was in Fluor last year and loved it. He became close with the 8 suite mates, plus friends with the other suites on the floor. His suite mates went as a group to the football games and often ate together. He will be rooming with two from his suite and one from a suite on the floor. A group from the floor took a ski trip together. The tower took trips to the beach, rock climbing, Knotts, etc.

Being concerned about the social experience in Fluor should be the least of your worries as an entering freshman. No one can predict how social your floor or suitemates will be but regardless, you are going to get only as much out of it as you put in. You will become friends with at least some of your suitemates and to a lesser extent, some of your floormates. In general, freshmen are very social when they arrive to college and want to make friends. In the end, there are 2000 other freshmen on campus and 100s of ways to meet people and by already limiting yourself to Fluor, you’re making a mistake before you even arrive on campus.

I think it will be fine. My D will be a freshman in Fluor. She wants to make friends too. She’s far more concerned with living on the 10th floor (earthquake) than she is worried about making friends.

snowdog I’m on the 10th floor too!! whats your daughters name?

I’m going to be a junior now so I think I can speak to your concerns a little bit. Most of the people I know from Fluor got along very well with their suites/floors, some making their best friends there. Most people had friends from their suites and stuff but had most of their friends outside the tower since there are just so many other people on the campus. Basically, if you join different student orgs and put yourself out there you’ll find friends anywhere.

Also, subjectively speaking, people in Fluor seemed pretty cool the last two years. I even brought my dog in there last year as a Sophomore and he was well loved by all :).
