Spotted: CCM flute prof lunching at Oberlin this past week...is he taking the Debost job? Any news on this front?

Now that’s a juicy rumor. I have not heard a word about who will be there after Debost retires.

Haven’t heard his name mentioned. We have heard the possibilities include…Carol Wincenc, Robert Dick, Bonita Boyd (would do both Eastman and Oberlin) and someone from the Detroit MET. But then again…

I wrote to Oberlin Con about this and received the following answer:
- they’ve made an offer to someone
- they will notify accepted student as soon as they can
- the expect it to be before May 1st and hope it will be as soon as possible

Philip Dikeman, who was the 4th possibility (from the Detroit Symphony) has taken a full-time position at Blair/Vanderbilt, per online press releases in mid-March 2011.

Looks like they won’t annouce the new prof before May 1! The recent report is that it will be closer to June 1.

Super interesting, since such positions are in hand for many, many years - when someone knows the new teacher, would you pls. post it!

what does this mean?

Top studio teachers often hold their positions for something like 40 yrs - there is very little turnover in these top positions. So it IS interesting to see who will get a prominent position like this one at Oberlin. I suggest you check the age of some of these teachers - full respect, but they are very senior in age.

Some teachers hang around longer than they should while others can be effective regardless of age. Debost was one of the latter. His studio classes are amazing.

If they tend to hang around for 40 years, they cannot be all that old when they start.

Also you have to look at the type of teacher.

Robert Dick would be very unlikely because does almost solely contemporary music. A school like Oberlin would need a more classical-focused teacher. Since Oberlin is an undergrad-only school, Carol Wincenc is highly unlikely because she’s typically considered to be a “finishing” teacher, someone who works mainly with grad students.

I would not be surprised if they hire an interim teacher - ie, someone who will be there for a year, while they look for someone permanent.

@ mtpaper, I suspect you could be right. When I spoke with them at the beginning of March they told me that an offer had been made and declined. I have to wonder if it took them all year to get to that point, how are they going to find someone in just a short time? They have delayed their acceptance deadline until they do hire someone. I see your D was accepted to Oberlin. Is she still considering?

@mtpynest - Oberlin hasn’t actually been looking for Debost’s replacement for a full year… when we contacted him in early Oct 2010 for a lesson, he told us he’d be retiring, but he hadn’t formally announced it yet to the school.

Oberlin’s website has the formal Job Opening notification dated November 3, 2010, with an application deadline of Jan 10, 2011. [Job Description - Oberlin College](<a href=“Oberlin College & Conservatory Applicant Portal | Home”>Oberlin College & Conservatory Applicant Portal | Home)

And their faculty handbook has a whole list of requirements for the process, including Student Interviews. It’s a long-drawn out process.
It’s interesting that you were told in early March that an offer had been made and declined. Because I think there was also an offer pending as of early April, and I think that has fallen thru (thus the extension).

If they’re still talking with Bonita Boyd, I really can’t imagine her doing the Rochester-Oberlin commute for an extended period of time. I sure couldn’t do it!

My d will make her final decision in the next few days. She was out of the country for the past 10 days so everything was on hold.

I can’t imagine Bonita Boyd taking on Oberlin. In fact, if I remember correctly, Eastman claims that their faculity has to sign an agreement to put the needs of the school first. It seems it would be a conflict of interest for her to take on another conservatory.

any updates on this?

Does anyone know if Chastain is staying on faculty, or what Debost is planning to do in his retirement? I was wondering if he and Kathleen would plan to go back to France.

We were told, albeit awhile ago, that Chastain would stay on faculty. I don’t remember if she’d be full-time or part-time. The new person would definitely be the primary teacher.

As such, I assume Debost will stay in Oberlin.

I’m sure you can ask if that is still the plan.

Has anyone heard any updates from Oberlin about the flute faculty for Fall 2011 onward?

I spoke with them about two weeks ago and still nothing. I was lead to believe that a temp person is a real possibility. We do know one girl who has chosen to attend (for flute) despite the unknown teacher. She received a large FA package which I am sure helped her decision.
