Flute Studios

I would love to have input on the following flute studios and teachers that I am considering:
Ithaca- Wendy Mehne and Kelly Covert
UNCG- Dr. Egekvist
Elon University- Linda Cykert
Susquehanna University- Reuben Councill
Shenandoah Conservatory- Dr. Averitt
George Mason- Judith Lapple
James Madison- Beth Chandler
Skidmore College- Jan Vinci
NYU
Oberlin

I go to GMU right now. THe flute studio has some good players in it, but it has a variety of talent. Everyone is really supportive, but the problem is that there are A LOT of flute players in the studio right now so it’s harder to get into the ensembles. Also, I don’t know if you will be studying with Judy because she doesn’t have that much space.

Are there any specific questions that you have? What kind of flute studio are you looking for?

I also know someone that goes to Susquehanna University and she really likes it there.

The modern flute teachers at Oberlin are Michel Debost and Kathleen Chastain, both of whom have played with Orchestre de Paris and taught at the Paris Conservatoire. Competition for spots in either studio is likely to be pretty fierce, but Debost in particular puts Oberlin on the short list for some of the best students worldwide. I have had the privilege of observing a couple of his masterclasses and he is both an amazing teacher and quite a character. Michael Lynn, well known in the Early Music world, teaches Baroque flute and recorder there.

Not specific to flute, but you can use the Master List threads http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/618208-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2009-a.html?highlight=Master</a> and http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/665738-master-list-final-decisions-fall2009.html?highlight=Master</a> to find specific school and discipline “direct from source” info.

You can try and search for past posts by a specific poster name or school of interest, and you can use CC’s pm or email features to contact them directly.

There’s links within each Master (typically at the beginning and/or the end of the thread) to the prior year’s version and they go back yo the '07 cycle (although that one is not designated by a year in the title).

Always use the last post, as it contains the most comprehensive listing.

I quickly scanned the masters for the schools you named, and BEK’s d had an acceptance at Ithaca for flute. You may want to try an email or pm.

What year are you in? We hear great things about Jan Vinci. She has a summer program, might be worth trying out.

For Oberlin you may wish to check out the summer program there this year:

[Flute Institute - Oberlin College](http://new.oberlin.edu/conservatory/summer/flute-institute/)

We met Jan Vinci late last year at a Masterclass that she gave in Cleveland. She is a wonderful person and excellent performer. She brought out the best in each of the students that participated at that event.

Best of luck to you
JD

Thanks for the info. Starlessyoru- will the school guarantee that you be working with Judy before going there? Do you study with Judy?

I don’t study with Judy because there are too many flute players this year. I study with her daughter, Jenny. The university doesn’t guarantee anything. I’m pretty sure you’ll get in because it’s not that hard, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be with Judy. Also, the top ensemble only accepts 4 flute players even though there are like 20 flute players. I’m trying to transfer myself because of this.

I see that you’re auditioning at conservatories. GMU is a very laid back music program, but it does have a few talented players and it’s not rigorous as a conservatory program. It just depends what you’re looking for.

I have been accepted at GMU and at the music program. What is your favorite thing(s) about the program? What would you change?

I like the music facility and the faculty is good. As for the students, everyone’s nice and supportive. I wish there were more challenging pieces for the ensembles to play. A lot of the music majors aren’t that motivated and they don’t practice enough so I would change that, too. Basically, I just wish the program was more rigorous instead of laid back.

Thank you! Very helpful info. Does anyone have any info on the other schools?

Feel free to PM if you want :)
