Flutie Factor

The “Flutie Factor” came up on another board and I thought it would be interesting to see what people think about it. I’d never heard of it but a Google search revealed that its the rise in applications at a school that corresponds with the success of the school’s athletics teams. It’s named after Doug Flutie whose “Hail Mary” pass “put Boston College on the map.” Interestingly, the first article that pops up in a Google search is one from BC’s alumni magazne that discredits the theory.
I remember that game, I was like 7 or something. Its funny to me that 21 years later Flutie is still playing football at 43 years of age. Not bad for a person who they said was waaaay too short to play QB. This guy has been playing football longer than most of this board have been alive. After that play, he went to the USFL for a couple years, then after that folded, he played in the CFL for a couple years, then came to the NFL briefly, then went back to Canada I believe, then resurfaced in 1998 for the Bills. The past 3 or 4 years has been with the Chargers. He just recently signed with another team who escapes me at the moment. Truly an interesting man.

He just came home to play for the NE Patriots. Yes it has been a long time since he played at BC, he has a daughter who will be a senior in HS this year. Perhaps she is even on CC! ;-)
