Fly or drive for move-in

So I live about 16 hours away from NYC and was wondering, do most people outside of the new england area fly or drive up to Columbia for move-in day?

I abhor long car rides, and I would imagine driving 30ish hours would suck for my dad.

I'm leaning towards flying, so would a large suitcase or two be sufficient for the "bare essentials"? And has anyone tried mailing your stuff up there?

Also, I plan on doing a pre-orientation program, so I'll be moving in a week or so early. I know this is really early, but I'm trying to decide if I want to do a summer program which ends only two days (which may not be enough time to drive up) before the early move-in day. Thanks.

This post is Beverly Hillbilly-esque… cheap commercial air travel exists for a reason, dude.

what about sending boxes before you arrive- would they keep it for you or what?

I think you should drive, it allows you bring more stuff to Columbia, which on the flip side means you’ll have more stuff at columbia [think storage]:-s. More importantly though, it forces you to see the vast, depressing abyss that is the American countryside, and be that much more taken aback when you hit the vibrant metropolis of Manhattan and the serene, sophisticated, majestic Columbia

flowery poetry aside, it all depends on how much stuff you actually need. If you’re the ascetic type who can get by on a suitcase’ worth of clothes, another suitcase having toiletries, entertainment, a couple of framed photos and more clothes, and your laptop… then maybe you should fly. Flying will be cheaper, anyway, when you factor in gas, tolls, and wear-n-tear on the car. On the other hand, if you’re Material Girl and can’t imagine life without your 50 pairs of shoes, 20 dressy outfits, 20 casual outfits, and enough makeup to open a mall kiosk… maybe piling it all into your friendly neighborhood minivan is the way to go. It all depends on you.
