Flying in and out in one day to see Auburn

My D and I are from NJ and I want to bring her to Auburn to see the campus. She is an accepted student in the honors college and the school seems like a good fit. We could fly into Atlanta and back out in the same day - getting into Atlanta at 8am (7am Central/Auburn time) and flying back out at 9pm (EST/Atlanta time) that same evening. I know it would be a lot of driving, but is it doable to see the school in one day or is that really pushing it since the campus is so large? I hear that the tours are under 2 hours. There is a tour at 11am that seems totally doable with a drive of an hour and 45 min. in either direction. Has anyone done the campus tour in one day before?

It is doable, but she may not get to see everything.

My daughter and I visited for a War Eagle day last April. We were only there one day and even though we didn’t get to see everything, we saw enough for my daughter to fall in love with the school. (I also fell in love with it.) Now, we could have seen more but that day was unusually cold and we didn’t pack for cold weather and as the wimps we are, we didn’t walk around the campus a lot. We did drive around the community and we liked what we saw.

We are returning at the end of May for Camp War Eagle and I am excited to see more of the campus then.

We visited there in February for Presidential Scholar’s Day and while we were in Auburn for three days, we were only on campus for one of the days. You could definitely do it, but it would be a busy day. Auburn is actually a “small” large campus. It is not as spread out as other campuses of similar size that we visited. Yes, it will take and hour and 45 minutes to drive from Atlanta, (unless you hit an ice storm like we did and it takes four hours) and it’s nice you know that Atlanta and Auburn are in two different time zones. We didn’t realize that until a few days before out trip-lol.

Glad this seems doable. We just booked our flight and 11am tour. We’re excited to go. Everyone keeps telling me the campus is not so huge - I kind of envision it being like a University of Md, but I guess it’s not that spread out, which could be good for my D. The time change thing is a little nutty, but like mustang said, at least we know in advance…just figured that out a few days ago. We just need to keep track of what time it “really is” so we don’t miss our flight that night. My D thinks the time change over the state line is cool. Who knows, that small detail could be the deciding factor for her. lol

We went to Presidential Scholar Day as well and got to attend info sessions and get a good tour. We fell in love with Auburn as well. We were concerned about getting to and from there, as we thought we could only drive it. We live in New Orleans. We were thrilled to learn there was a shuttle from the hotel on campus that goes to the Atlanta airport a few times a day. We have a friend there who initially brought his car and wound up bringing it home and leaving it home at Thanksgiving. He was happy to use the airport shuttle and not have to worry about parking anymore.

I heard about that shuttle. Wasn’t sure if we should use though for this trip in case we want to explore the area but it’s an excellent option for a kid that has to find their way to the Atlanta airport. I am a big fan!

As some one who lives in Metro Atlanta, you’ve chosen a good time to arrive and travel to Auburn. My wife was surprised how walkable the Auburn campus in comparison to University of Georgia. As one who attended many college basketball games at University of Marland (College park), there is a big difference in the campuses. You’ll love the look and feel of Auburn’s campus. If you had not already, try to arrange a visit to one of the dorms which your daughter is considering. Also, I would rent a car from airport.

MetroAtlantaDad - thx! Dorms are definitely on the list and we do plan to rent a car. My D got into UGA but they gave her no $$ - so that is out, to her dismay, as is Clemson for the same reason. I hear both are beautiful though. My husband and I are alumni of UMD and my daughter was not a fan of the campus - way too spread out, hated the bars on the windows (I never noticed), too close to home (3 hours, sigh, omg) and she couldn’t wear flip flops there 24/7, 365 days a year - which is clearly a reason to pay $30+ year to go to college! lol

I’d love to get your insight on how Auburn is different from UMD. That could be very good in my situation! We have never been. Auburn is in her top 3 or 4 that we’ve narrowed her list of 8 down to - in no particular order… College of Charleston (honors), Tulane, Auburn (honors) and maybe (if she’s lucky), Vandy. I’m sort of glad she has no expectations of the last 3 schools. Everyone told her she would LOVE Charleston and while that was great to hear and got her excited to go, her expectations of falling in love at first sight were so high, it could not live up all the wonderful things she heard. This process is very interesting. So glad her twin sister applied early decision to Lafayette and we are done with the college process with at least one them!

Your daughter also may view the group on Facebook entitled "Auburn University Class of 2014 ". There’s like over 900 kids have joined the group. She can peruse the Wall tab and also the Discussions tab (especially Roommate survey). This information may provide a feel of students attending in the Fall. There are quite a few out of state students in this group. You can send me a PM and we can talk anytime.
