Since UF is centrally located, I was wondering, for those who fly in, what airport do you come in? Do you fly into Orlando, Tampa, or is there another airport? I assume one would rent a car and drive the rest of the distance.

We're hoping to do a summer grad school visit and would love some input.

Thanks!

Jacksonville is about 1 1/2 away
Orlando and Tampa about 2 hours away

Gainesville Regional Airport is just a few miles away and Delta, US airways, American Eagle fly there so you can check out the fares

As the previous poster said, There is an airport right IN gainesville. I believe American Airlines also flies into that one.

Recently researched this (this morning!) - from some airports the flights to Orlando were cheaper than those to Gainesville, however, for the dates I looked at car rental rates in Orlando were much higher making the cheaper fares a wash when considered with the additional drive and car rental. From my home airport there was no advantage to flying to Jacksonville, Orlando or Daytona Beach - all the tickets were with within $10 of each other. Delta was the most competitively priced airline for me - American tickets were 2x.

American Airlines is ridiculously expensive. A round trip ticket between two Florida cities was close to $400 for me during a non-peak time.

I’m def going to look into delta now ha

I grew up in Gainesville and went to college there. My parents still live there. Gainesville is a small regional airport and easy to get in and out of but usually pretty expensive. Jacksonville is your next closest airport (less than 2 hours - probably 90 minutes or so). Then Orlando should be your next to check…it’s huge and cheaper than the other two and about 2 hours drive time but an expensive drive because you take a lot of toll roads to get to Gainesville so everything you saved flying in could be lost in driving. (really it’s probably only $12 each way in tolls)

When most people talk about the “orlando airport” they are talking about MCO…but orlando is also served by the smaller regional airport in Sanford (SFB). This airport often has very discounted flights to secondary metro markets and is worth checking out as another option.
