I do this a lot. I have found the Wikipedia entry for that airport shows the non-stop destinations from that airport.
So, for Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport, these would be the non-stop destinations:

This is the page for special assistance from American Airlines
I think it’s assistance as far as mobility, vision or hearing in the airport. It doesn’t look like there is special assistance when there are issues with the actual flights delays and cancellations.
I always ask for special assistance when I have booked my mom’s flights. She waits until she gets to the airport because she gets confused doing things online.
The time my mom missed her flight due to be at the wrong gate, the gate agent wanted her to go to the main desk. She refused and cried. Said that she was mobility impaired and couldn’t walk there. Then they helped her. Reluctantly.
When my mom was early in her ALZ and still insisted on flying, we were able to get permission to escort her to the gate and got permission for family to meet her at the gate on the arrival end. It would have been a disaster if her flight was diverted in any way. Thankfully she stopped asking to travel without someone. The airlines do crap for seniors needing anything but mobility assistance.
I like to go to Google Flights Explore. Here’s Quebec City: https://www.google.com/travel/explore?tfs=CBwQAxocEgoyMDIzLTA2LTA5KABqDAgDEggvbS8wcG1wMhocEgoyMDIzLTA2LTEzKAByDAgDEggvbS8wcG1wMkABSAFwAoIBCwj___________8BmAEBsgEEGAEgAQ&tfu=GgIgAw
Then you can click on the city you want to fly from and reverse it so it’s non-stop that way. Here’s a DC flight: https://www.google.com/travel/flights/search?tfs=CBwQAhoqEgoyMDIzLTEwLTE5KABqDAgCEggvbS8wcmg2a3IMCAMSCC9tLzBwbXAyGioSCjIwMjMtMTAtMjUoAGoMCAMSCC9tLzBwbXAycgwIAhIIL20vMHJoNmtAAUgBcAGCAQsI____________AZgBAQ&hl=en-US&curr=USD
I understand that it is not ideal, but they do offer service for cognitive impairments, which might have provided more support. They do specify that the traveler must be able to spend a night in a hotel unsupervised if necessary, and that could be emotionally trying.
I’ve always used these two websites to look for direct flights from any airport:
Awww, @mynameiswhatever tells me that those are into YUL (Montreal) not YQB. Darn Google!!
No question, what happened to your mother was particularly egregious, and there is absolutely no excuse for that. I agree with others that you should make a stink.
I absolutely agree that American Airlines sucks big time. When people are taking United because it’s better, any airline needs to do some deep soul searching.
That’s why some people pay for the private escort services.these companies arose in response to a need.
Be sure to use “nonstop” and not “direct” when talking to airline people when you really mean “nonstop”. In airline terminology, “direct” means that the same flight number is used for all segments of the flight, so it may stop in intermediate locations (i.e. not necessarily nonstop between your origin and destination). On some airlines, a “direct” flight may even require changing planes, so you can miss your connection on a “direct” flight if your first segment is delayed.
Saw New York, Chicago, Orlando had direct flights to Quebec City , in the past month.
I think it used to be available but no longer. Maybe it’s seasonal or something.
Even though we almost always fly American or Southwest, we recently did fly Delta and had a really good experience.
Unfortunately she lives in a tiny town everything is a connection unless you are going to Dallas.
We are almost an hour from the Denver airport. But there are a fair amount of direct flights from there. It’s one of the things we like about this location. As shown above, lots of variability in flights these days. We do sometimes pay more to get the direct option to minimize risk of disruption.
I sympathize with your situation. We’re planning my D’s wedding in September and the groom’s family is grappling with how to get his two elderly grandmas to the wedding. They each live in a small town, but not the same town or even the same state. And they are definitely past the age of being able to travel on their own. Flying is so stressful these days. I’m not sure any airline today offers the kind of assistance that your mom would’ve needed to navigate the cancellation and rebooking in a satisfactory way.
Out of curiosity I did an online search and apparently there are companies that provide senior travel companions - if you’re willing to pay
My mom has good faculties but is super nice and does not want to cause a fuss. Unfortunately nice grandmas get left in the dust. As much as airlines complain about unruly, rude travelers; if you are nice it certainly does not help.
Interesting. Maybe there is some opportunity here for some college kids to hire out as travel partner.
