Flying to cal for orientation?

I live in southern california, about an 8hr drive from cal, so while I’m not ridiculously far from cal, I’d like to fly up for my orientation day. Since the first day is a monday and starts early, I’d need to sleep there sunday night. I’ll probably be doing the early arrival accomodations so I’ll need to get to the cal campus on that sunday when I arrive.

Now, my question is: what airport should I get a flight to(oakland?) and what are my options for getting to campus from the airport? Will the university be running shuttles that day despite it being a Sunday?

Any information at all would be appreciated.

Yeah I need to fly, too. Any information would be much appreciated.

i flew up to cal once, but i don't know if you'd want to do the same thing.. southwest runs pretty cheap but i don't like the idea of the whole airplane bus thing.. (i.e. no assigned seating).. jetblue might go to oakland too, but i'm not sure.. oh yeah, and buy tickets early so that they don't charge you major money.. and um.. i don't know how to get to campus by shuttle, the last time i went my mom had rented a car and we just drove.. i'm hoping there's going to be a shuttle.. or i'm screwed :(

you can take the BART from the oakland airport to cal. that's what my friends did when they flew up this past weekend. there's stops on camups and at the airport.

Is it easy to find the BART from the airport? How much does it cost?

I'm pretty sure the BART from Oakland to Berkeley is $1.25 one way, plus it drops you off right next to campus.

at the oakland airport, i believe the BART stop is right in front of the exit. for a one-way trip, it costs $1.90 from the oakland airport to the downtown berkeley stop.

oakland airport ---> air bart ---> bart ---> shattuck

what day is cal orientation?

I think you've missed it...

are your parents coming with you to the orientation? (are they supposed to?) or are you flying/going alone?

^^ I'm going alone, but there is a guest program if your parents want to come ^^

Can anyone give me an estimate of how much time it will take to get from OAK to Cal and vise versa? I'm purchasing tickets right now and I need to know how much time to allot to getting to OAK from Cal on the second day.

The CalSO guy told me yesterday at the New Student Reception that Southwest has the best flights to Oakland. I'd fly out of Onterio as opposed to LA, just because it's crazy at the later.

I would fly out of oakland a couple of hours after orientation ends (approx. noon), because you never know what delays might happen and you don't want to miss your flight.

Well, orientation ends at 1 and so far I'm looking at a 4:45 flight.

I just want to make sure the BART won't take 3 hours to reach OAK from Cal.

You'll be taking BART from the Berkeley station to Oakland Coliseum (or thereabouts) and xferring to the AirBART which takes you to the airport. You can check out the schedules online. If you are really pressed for time, a taxi will probably take 30-40 minutes (assuming there is any traffic).

Like LA, the traffic in the Bay Area is getting harder and harder to predict. From the rough sounds of it, 3hrs should be plenty of time (even given the 60 minute check-in). The day of the week will also affect it, as there are plenty of commuters who fly between socal and nocal.

I'll be flying to CalSO as well (I live in SoCal). I e-mailed the CalSO staff and here's the info they provided:

Unfortunately, CalSO does not provide transportation. However, the Bay Area has very accessible public transportation options. I have personally found the BART train very easy and affordable. Outside of each terminal there is an AirBART shuttle (rainbow colored), you pay $2 to take it and it drops you off at Oakland Coliseum BART station. From there, you buy a $1.90 BART ticket and board the Richmond train. Your stop is Downtown Berkeley BART station. You can then walk or take a bus to Unit 1. For an exact schedule please visit this website: http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index.asp

Another option is to take a door to door shuttle from the airport to Unit 1. I believe the shuttle stop at the airport is located outside of Terminal 1 (but there should be signs). Just let the driver know that you need to be at Unit 1 in Berkeley (Durant and College Ave). The prices range from $19-22.

(Going to Unit 1 for the early check in the day before).

Ok, thanks a lot for the information avoidingwork and eiffelguy87, I've purchased my tickets now and have planned out my trip.

For others interested, you should check out the http://bart.gov site(or the aforementioned transit.511.org one) to look at BART times, planning, etc.
