I'm planning on flying to Cornell from the West Coast -- what's the easiest way to do this? I can get a flight into JFK or LaGuardia, but what then? Are there preferences for JFK v. LaGuardia?

you can fly to either nyc airport and then take a bus to ithaca. or you could just take a plane to ithaca.

what i usually do is take a plane to syracuse and then take a bus to ithaca.

hey tmk, could you share your experience of taking bus from Syracuse to Ithaca with us?
Based on what I found on the internet, public transportations to Ithaca all look complicated and time-consuming :(

fly to ithaca - there arent that many airlines that fly into the small ithaca airport and tickets are sometimes expensive; you can land in ithaca and then take a taxi ($20-ish) to campus or have someone you know with a car pick you up

fly to syracuse - i usually fly here b/c i use jetblue which has cheaper prices based on my experiences. i use ithaca airline limo (not a real “limo” but more of a bus) to get from syr to ithaca. $80 one way, $110 round trip. about an hour drive. quite a few ppl use this bus service

flying into ithaca would be more convenient but i usually go to syracuse b/c that is the cheaper route for me. depends on where youre flying from.

are you coming alone?

which airport are you flying from?

syracuse can be cheaper (but you have to shop around too)

i find that the syracuse airfare + ithaca limo (to cornell) is sometimes the same price as a flight to ithaca…

go to flyithaca (dot) com and check for prices…

I am flying from California with my mom and we found that flying to Syracuse is cheapest and then we will rent a car. Syracuse is only like 1 hour I think so it’s not bad at all.

ok GL.

i just checked prices today…they went up $100 from two days ago O_O

I fly straight into ithaca, it is 100x more convenient, and for me, continental to ithaca is as cheap as it is to syr (might have actually been cheaper, can’t remember anymore), which makes it significantly cheaper since the limo to ithaca is $80 one way (more than half the cost of my roundtrip ticket directly to ithaca!). My last roundtrip from ith-jacksonville, fl was $118 plus taxes, $160 total, but I may have got lucky on the price. Flying home after last semester though the plane was overfilled and I got a $250 voucher from continental for giving up my seat, and I arrived home via a different airline about the same time my continental flight was supposed to arrive. I would never fly into syracuse.

hermanns: do you ever have trouble during winter break with flights getting cancelled?

i’m sure if not hermans…several hundred others do o_O

i know i have not had a flight that wasnt delayed somehow or another…if you’re flying into philly…prepare for the worst :(

Twice my friend flew out of Ithaca to go home for winter break and twice her flight was cancelled ;)

yeah flights are often cancelled…i think one time they let kids stay in their dorm rooms even after the deadline b/c of soo many cancelled flights.

if flights are cancelled they will sometimes do a charter bus to take you to newark airport (to catch your connecting flight or w/e)

I’ve found that flying into Syracuse and trying to arrange transportation back to campus is a big hassle. I fly into LaGuardia from Chicago and take a small connecting flight to Ithaca (usually USAirways). Tickets are about $150-200 one way and taxi fare is $15-20. And yes, departing flights are often cancelled at Ithaca because they don’t have the de-icing equipment/manpower that the larger airports do.

I spent a lovely night stranded in the Philadelphia airport about a month ago after my 3 hour delay at Ithaca made me miss my connection.

I’ve only from to/from ithaca 3 or 4 times now, but never had a single delay, guess I am just lucky. My flight to ITH from philly back in mid january actually left 10mins early to avoid a snowstorm (the next 4 days straight after that stayed in single digits and terrible snow IIRC, so I probably did get lucky on timing). I’d still prefer flying directly into ithaca though.

I’m coming from Vancouver.

The current plan is to drive down to Seattle, fly to Newark, then to Ithaca.

Any more people flying from the West Coast or Canada? Share your experiences (and plane ticket price)!

I’m from Seattle.
To me, the best option so far is to fly from Seattle to Syracuse (Jetblue appears to be the cheapest), and then either
rent a car(if someone can drive for you) or take a bus to Ithaca.
